The Lady Elks softball team of Elkin High School was able to shake out a victory over the Sauras of South Stokes for the second match-up between the two teams within five days. The win allowed the Lady Elks to advance to the 1A Northwest Conference Tournament finals where they faced their close rivals, the Lady Cardinals of East Wilkes. The Cardinals managed to top the Elks for the third time this season, earning them the tournament championship.

In a crazy, back and forth scoring frenzy, the Sauras of South Stokes were the first to get on the board in the fourth inning of the matchup with the Lady Elks on Wednesday, May 1. A home run to left field which brought in two runs for the Sauras began the scoring fury. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Elks captured the lead, 3-2, when senior Leigha Church hit a single, scoring one run and then a Saura error brought home two Elk runners.

The Sauras regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning when they scored three runs triggered by a double hit. But, the Elks flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take the lead, 9-5. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by senior Macy Lane.

Senior pitcher Lily Robbins earned the win for her team, striking out seven while only walking one batter and surrendering only five hits. The Elks collected eleven hits total in the game. Robbins, the leadoff hitter, led the team with three hits in five turns at bat. Church went 2-for-4 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in. Lane collected two hits and sophomore Mackenzie White led the team with two walks. Overall, Elkin had a strong eye at the plate, piling up five walks for the game. Elkin won with a final score of 9-7.

The win over the Sauras earned the Elks a third matchup on the season with the Lady Cardinals of East Wilkes on Thursday, May 2. Both teams were strong in the circle, but East Wilkes was just a little stronger at the plate in their 3-0 victory over the Elks.

East Wilkes got on the board in the third inning after a single scored one run. Elkin struggled all evening at the plate with only senior Karly Gentry and Lane collecting one hit each for the Elks. Gentry, the relief pitcher for the Elks, went five innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits by the Cardinals. Gentry had three strikeouts and one walk. Robbins led off in the circle and gave up two hits, walking one. Errors plagued the Elks all game and they struggled to find a rhythm both on the field and at the plate. The 0-3 win by the Lady Cardinals gave the East Wilkes team the tournament championship title.
