    Elkin Wet Lightning wins big over Reeves Rapids

    ELKIN — Elkin Wet Lightning Swim Team hosted the Reeves Rapids of Mount Airy on Saturday, June 29. EWL, a much larger team than their friends from the Reeves Community Center of Mount Airy, sailed to an easy win.

    In the first event of the day, the rigorous 100-meter IM event, where the swimmer must swim one lap of each of the four swim strokes, Elkin established dominance early. In the girls 8 & under age group, Carter Allgood, 7 years old, took a 2nd place finish with a time of 2:41.16. Ellie Dimmette (1:52.94), Lucy Willard (1:53.83) and Ester Dickerson (2:11.21) claimed the 3rd, 4th and 5th places in the girls 9-10 age group. Swimming for the boys same event, Myles Edwards (2:09.48) grabbed a 1st place finish. In the girls 13-14 event, Mia Swaim (1:33.24) and Layla Edwards ( 1:41.00) took the two top spots, while Amelia Presley (1:13.83), Katie Beth Garza (1:26.06) and Elissa Dickerson (1:34.58) took the top three spots in the girls 15-18 age group.

    Dominance continued for Elkin in the freestyle events. In the girls 6 & under 25-meter freestyle event, Ember Dobson (43.52), Neely Edwards (50.41) and Natalia Manigault (51.61) all earned points with a 1st, 2nd and 4th place finish. Jack Gentry (27.49), and Brady Creed (41.87) took a 1st and 4th place finish for the boys. In the girls 7-8 age group, Jordan Pardue (21.65), Carter Allgood (26.31), Addie Long (28.03), Claire Sisoukrath (29.26) all earned point for their team with a 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finish. Elkin’s Wiley Stille (30.28), Iselle Westra ((30.38), Lola Salley (35.58), Adelynn Manigault (39.19) and Nora Corcoran (47.84) posted a 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 12th place finish respectively. In the boys 7-8 race, Matthew Gentry (17.73), Jonah Johnson (21.45), Leo Storie (21.49) and Michael Creed (27.03) grabbed the top four spots while teammates Alex Roberts (30.59), Luke Johnson (34.44), Xavier Pruitt (39.48) and Braxton Martin (39.65) claimed 5th, 7th, 10th and 11th place finishes. In the 9-10 25-meter freestyle race, Makaila Schosser (18.22), Hadley Gaddis (21.20), Harper Richardson (22.88) and Haven Simmons (23.54) grabbed the top four spots. Ellie Baker (23.73) swimming in her first meet of the season, claimed 5th place while Annabelle Lowder (26.35) and Inezleigh Westra (33.76) rounded out the competition with a 7th and 8th place finish. Swimming for the boys, Ricky Royall (18.06), Myles Edwards (21.05) and Henry Stille (21.17) claimed the top three places while Samuel Boggs (21.85) claimed a 4th place finish.

    In the girls 11-12 50-meter freestyle event, Phoebe Flippin (36.59) claimed the top spot. Adelyn Reed ( 36.98), Addie Baker (37.86) and Leyna Simmons (38.16) finished in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. Melia Orta (39.56), Summer McBride (41.10), Shayla Ange (41.57), Annabelled Dickerson (42.16), Aliza Lowder (55.10), Addy White (1;01.40) and Aubree Pruitt (1:03.80) rounded out the 5th thru 11th place finishes. Caleb Bumgarner (36.54) and Jett Laws (56.22) claimed 1st and 2nd place finishes for the boys 11-12 age group. In the girls 13-14 age group, Mikayla Dickerson (35.23), Layla Edwards (36.53), Emma Waters ( 38.30), and Graceanna Church (42.36) claimed the 2nd thru 5th places. Ashlyn Brooks (44.02), Brylie Ange (49.24), Katie Lyles (49.49) and Adelyn Lowder (52.71) rounded out the event with 6th thru 9th place finishes. Dylan Zamu;dio (30.56) and Grant Leeds (45.26) claimed the top two spots in the boys 13-14 race.

    In the oldest age group, the girls 15-18 age group, Sophie Welborn (28.47), a Catawba College swim recruit, took the top spot. Mya Brown (33.54), Sarika Hatcher ( 34.01), Gabby Farmer (34.03), Elisa Dickerson (35.18), Maria Wilborn (38.35) and Presley Swaim (41.35) helped EWL to sweep the event with 2nd thru 7th place finishes. Swimming for the boys, Troy Snow (26.81), also a college swim recruit, took the 1st place finish. Luke McComb (29.38) Evan Baker (29.59), Sawyer Poindexter (29.64), Parker Church (29.91), Xander Carpentier (31.31) and Granger Teachey (43.61) claimed the 2nd thru 7th place finishes to also sweep the event for Elkin.

    Elkin will travel next to compete with the Wytheville Waves of Wytheville, Virginia on Saturday, July 6. They will then turn around and host the Waves at home on Tuesday, July 9, where competition will begin at 6 pm. The Smoke Shack Food Truck will be on site for the Tuesday evening event and the public is invited to come cheer on EWL.
