    Elkin Wet Lightning wraps up regular season with two wins

    In a busy last week of regular season swim, Elkin Wet Lightning maintains a perfect record by adding two more W’s to their win column. On Thursday evening, Elkin hosted the Tigersharks of Carroll County. EWL, a much larger team than CC, sailed to an easy victory over the Tigersharks.

    The meet began with the rigorous 100-meter individual medley events. In this event, the swimmer must swim all four strokes. EWL jumped out front in the lead with this event and never looked back. In the 6 & under age group, Carter Allgood, in a tight race, came in 2nd place with a time of 2:44.18. Swimming for the boys in the same age group, Matthew Gentry grabbed the top spot with a time of 1:51.59. In the 9-10 age group, Lucy Willard (1:51.35) and Esther Dickerson (2:12.51) came in 1st and 2nd place earning points for their team. Myles Edwards (1:59.10) took 1st place for the boys. In the 11-12 age group, Leyna Simmons (1:39.64) and Addie Baker (1:47.67) placed in 2nd and 3rd place. In the 13-14 age group, Isabella Aroncles (1:32.97) grabbed gold for the girls while Bodhi Cummins (1:07.45) took the top spot for the boys with the fastest overall IM time for the night. In the 15-18 age group, veteran swimmers Sophie Welborn (1:14.48) and Elissa Dickerson (1:34.68) took 1st and 2nd places. Webb Snyder (1:11.21), Michael Tragone (1:20.79) and Parker Church (1:30.41) earned valuable points with 1st, 3rd and 4th place finishes for the guys.

    In the girls 8 & under breaststroke event, Teagan Hayes (28.64) found gold with a 1st place finish. Adelynn Manigault (36.24), Reagan Pendergraft (41.95) and Ember Dobson (39.01) finished in 4th, 5th and 6th place respectively. In the boys same race, Matthew Gentry (26.00), Jonah Johnson (30.27) and younger brother Luke Johnson (40.34) swept the event with 1st thru 3rd place finishes. In the girls 9-10 age group, Audrey Corcoran (25.90) was the top finisher while teammates Catherine Huff (26.31), Lucy Willard (26.34), Paige Lusso (27.45), Esther Dickerson (28.29) and Haven Simmons (30.54) rounded out the event with 2nd thru 6th place finishes. In the boys’ same event, Ricky Royal (30.70) was the top finisher. In the girls 11-12 age group, Leyna Simmons (52.42), Lizzy Charles (53.86), Annabelle Dickerson (55.95), Shayla Ange (1:01.18), Johannah Johnson (1:02.94) and Melia Orta (1:10.75) dominated the event with 2nd thru 7th place finishes. Swimming for the boys, Merrick Russell (1:16.00) came in 3rd place picking up points for his team. In the girls 13-14 age group, Mia Swaim (46.36) grabbed the gold finish while teammates Isabella Aroncles (51.11), Brylee Ange (1;00.65) and Jocelyn Johnson (1:02.51) finished in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. Zeke Simmons (44.42) came in 1st place for the boys. In the 15-18 age group, Sedessa Hatcher (38.33) and Elissa Dickerson (46.40) took the top two places. Swimming for the boys, Mark Davis (38.68) claimed gold while Michael Tragone (43.86) and Xander Carpentier (44.73) came in 3rd and 4th place.

    On a very wet and rainy Saturday morning, with weather much better suited for sleeping in than swimming, EWL traveled up I-77 to Dobson. After a significant delay due to the rain, the skies cleared for a perfect mid-morning swim competition between the two biggest teams in the Blue Ridge Swim League. In the tightest race for EWL this season, Elkin took the win for both the boys and girls, completing an undefeated BRSL regular season. EWL’s only loss this season came in the special Bluefield, West Virginia Invitational where only 30 swimmers were able to travel the long distance to compete.

    In the girls 10 & under 50-yard freestyle event, Paige Lusso (33.07) took the 1st place finish while Makaila Schosser (39.29), Annabelle Lowder (42.81), Harper Richardson (46.54), Iselle Westra (53.20), Inezleigh Westra (59.34), Adelynn Manigault (1:09.02) and Amelia Tate (1:19.99) took the next seven places with 2nd thru 8th place finishes. For the boys, Ricky Royall (40.62) and Samuel Boggs (46.39) took the top two spots, while Braxton Martin (57.28) came in 4th place for Elkin. In the girls 11-14 age 100-yard event, Amara Simmons (1:12.46) and Mikayla Dickerson (1:13.08) came in 2nd and 3rd places while Melia Orta (1:24.80) and Johanah Johnson (1:25.63) came in 6th and 7th places. In the same event for the boys, Caleb Bumgarner (1:14.46) and Grant Leeds (1:24.54) came in 1st and 2nd places. In the girls 15-18 age group, Sarika Hatcher (1:07.68) grabbed gold with a 1st place finish. Swimming for the boys, Sawyer Poindexter (1:01.47) and Ryder Russell (1:22.03) came in 1st and 2nd place.

    In the girls 6 & under butterfly event, Jordan Pardue (23.92) and Carter Allgood (30.89) took the top two spots while Matthew Gentry (20.06) and Leo Storie (20.97) battled it out in a tight race to take 1st and 2nd place. In the girls 9-10 age group, Lucy Willard (20.24) and Ellie Baker (27.16) took the top two spots. In the 11-12 age group for the 50-yard butterfly event, Addie Baker (40.47) took the gold finish for the girls. In the 13-14 age group, Amara Simmons (31.78), Mia Swaim (36.53), Isabella Aroncles (37.33) and Paisley Russell (39.55) swept the event with 1st thru 4th place finishes. In the girls 15-18 age group, Sophie Welborn (28.83) grabbed the 1st place finish while teammates Sarika Hatcher (33.07) and Maria Wilborn (40.39) came in 3rd and 6th place. Troy Snow (26.26) and Michael Tragone (30.40) earned valuable points for the boys with a 1st and 2nd place finish.
