EDGEMOOR, Del. — Investigators have released the name of a Cecil County woman who was fatally struck by a car on Sunday while attempting to walk across an interstate highway near Edgemoor — identifying her as 38-year-old Angel Alston of Elkton.

Delaware State Police officials released Alston’s name on Wednesday after making next-of-kin notifications.

Police said a 47-year-old Bear, Del. man was driving a white 2015 Honda Accord in the left lane of northbound I-495, north of Edgemoor Road, at approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday when Alston attempted to walk across northbound I-495 from the left side to the right side.

The vehicle struck Alston when she walked into its path, police added, noting that the pedestrian was not “wearing any reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight.” Alston was pronounced dead at the crash scene, police reported.

“During the investigation, it was discovered (that) the pedestrian was initially operating a black 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was located approximately a quarter-mile north of the crash scene, on the right shoulder with its hazard lights on,” a DSP spokesperson outlined.

After the collision, the Honda driver pulled onto the left shoulder of the highway and came to a stop, police reported.

The driver suffered minor injuries, as did his two passengers — a 46-year-old woman who is a resident of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and a 29-year-old man who lives in Philadelphia, Pa., police said. All three were treated and released at an area hospital, police added.

Emergency workers closed a section of that highway for approximately three hours, allowing for first responders to clear the scene and for DSP troopers to conduct an on-scene investigation, according to police.

As of Wednesday, DSP troopers assigned to the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continued their investigation, police reported. DSP officials are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal crash to call Master Corporal J. Forester at 302-365-8485. Information also may be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
