Redfin recently released a report that a record 25% of the house hunters on their site are considering a new city. It's part of an overarching migration across America caused by people in large metropolises moving to more affordable locations, and many others working remotely post-pandemic, allowing for location independence.

In Ohio's largest centers, the proportion who are considering leaving their cities is even higher, with about 28 - 43% looking at a new city. Many of those cities are out of state.

Now Redfin has revealed those searches by city, so we can track where people are likely to go.

    Dayton residents

A record 42.8% of Dayton house hunters are searching elsewhere. Although many are planning to stay in the state, their out-of-state destinations of choice are relatively close by:

    • Louisville (7.1%)
    • Washington (2.8%)
    • Chicago (2.1%)

Other destinations include Los Angeles, Dallas, and various cities in Florida (Cape Coral, Orlando, and North Port).

    Cleveland residents

A full 31% of Cleveland house hunters are searching outside the city. The most common out-of-state searches are:

    • Philadelphia (26.6%)
    • Chicago (5.1%)
    • Washington DC (3.2%)
    • Cape Coral, FL (3.0%)

Other destinations include Florida cities Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, as well as Los Angeles.

Numbers exceed 31% become some people are looking at multiple cities.

    Cincinnati residents

In Cincinnati, 28.7% of home searchers are looking outside the city. They're considering some different places from Clevelanders, including:

    • Louisville, KY (5.8%)
    • Lexington, KY (3.6%)
    • Chicago (4.7%)
    • Los Angeles (3.3%)
    • Cape Coral, FL (3.5%)
    • Miami (3.1%)

Other destinations include North Port, FL, and Indianapolis.

    Columbus residents

About 28% of Columbus house hunters are considering a move out of the city. They're eyeing:

    • Chicago (13.4%)
    • Louisville (6.8%)
    • Cape Coral, FL (3.2%)

There are a number of other destinations that some are considering, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, and Washington DC.

    Final Thoughts

Ohio may look very different in a few years as current residents move out and new residents move in. Would you ever leave the state? What spots would you consider?
