    2021-07-17

If you're looking for something fun to do this summer, why not visit an alpaca farm? I spent an afternoon visiting the alpacas and checking out the shop at this scenic Vermont farm.

    Vermont Alpaca Farm

The alpaca is a domesticated animal that was originally found only in South America, particularly Peru and Bolivia. It is similar to its cousin, the llama, but smaller and quieter. Who would have thought that you could visit this animal in Vermont?

But, much to my surprise, there is actually an Alpaca Farm located in Rutland County, Vermont. Wright's Alpaca Farm is located in Hubbardton, Vermont.

There are two different types of alpacas. They can be differentiated by their fiber. Much like some farmers have sheep on their farms, Wright Choice Alpaca Farm in Hubbardton, Vermont has Alpacas for the fiber.

What can you do with Alpaca fiber?

Alpaca fiber is often used in fashion, so you'll find clothes like sweaters on the market. Alpacas are also a source of warmth for some people because their fur keeps them warm and toasty during cold weather.

Alpacas are sheared every 12 to 18 months. This does not hurt the animals at all. The fiber is then turned into yarn which can be turned into shawls, socks, and sweaters.

Alpaca fiber can also be turned into felt which can then be used for toys or other craft projects.

The owners do this on their farm in Hubbardton, Vermont.

    Can I visit the alpacas?

Call ahead to set up a time to visit the alpacas at Wright Choice Alpacas in Hubbardton. They do offer times when you can visit the herd. And, they have alpacas that can be adopted if you would like to develop a closer connection to one of the animals in the herd.

    What do alpacas eat?

Alpacas are a type of animal that subsists on mostly grass, but their diet can also include leaves and wood. However, the alpacas at Wright Choice in Hubbardton Vermont enjoyed hay in special feeders throughout the farm as well.

    Where are they located?

They are located at 161 Howland Rd, Hubbardton, Vermont 05735

You need to call ahead to set up a time to visit. They do not have set hours so it's important that you give them notice so they can be available. Call them at (802) 236-5615.

    What services do they offer?

They offer breeding services for those that want to increase their herd. And, they also offer boarding services in Vermont if you need someone to care for your animal while you're away.

The owner has many years of experience in working with and raising alpacas. She is available to discuss behavioral problems that you're having with your animal.

But, most of all, she enjoys having people stop by and visit the herd. I got to spend several hours there seeing the animals and even got to pet them. I had no idea how soft their fur was. I can see why it's so popular to be used as sweaters and gloves.

It's hard to believe that summer is almost over, but there are still plenty of fun things to do. Visit a farm! I spent an afternoon visiting the alpacas and checking out the shop at this scenic Vermont farm.

It was so much more than just cuddling with some fuzzy animals. There were also artisan products for sale in the store, along with beautiful views and well-kept grounds. If you're looking for something fun to do this summer before school starts up again or while on vacation, why not visit an alpaca farm?
