Smuggler's Notch State Park

At 2,119 feet above sea level, Smugglers' Notch State Park is a Vermont state park near Stowe in Lamoille County. The name of the mountain range this park lies between was inspired by how smugglers would pass through these mountains to avoid the embargo act forbidding American trade with Great Britain and Canada during colonial times—hence "smuggler's notch."

Nestled between the Green Mountains, Smugglers’ Notch is a historic pass where you can still find 1,000-foot cliffs. Back in its early days, it was just a footpath and trail for horses that hikers would follow to get through this narrow passage.

In 2003, Smugglers’ Notch State Park was relocated. To protect and preserve the historic structures within the park, all of them were carefully moved from their original locations to a new site where they would be restored back into working order for future generations.

Now the new campground has more spread-out sites, a restroom facility that uses alternative energy, and is located near Bingham Falls.

Bingham Falls

A beautiful, secluded waterfall can be found in the Mt. Mansfield State Forest on a half-mile hike from Route 108 through 72 acres of conserved forest. The swimming hole features 40 feet cascading into deep pools and gorges that will make for an unforgettable experience!

The scenic corridor starts at the Barnes Camp Visitor Center and features a steep, winding pass filled with beautiful vistas. Visitors can take advantage of recreational opportunities such as hiking trails for their outdoor adventure.

Things to do while you're there

The Long Trail, a scenic trail that runs along the ridge of the Green Mountains is an amazing place to visit. Visitors can marvel at stunning views near Stowe or Barnes Camp Visitor Center where they can hike on trails through wetlands.

The Smugglers' Notch Picnic Area offers hikers and history buffs alike spectacular sights and sounds set by a beautiful stream in this area further up the road

Activities for kids

At this park, there is a special guide who helps you explore the natural and cultural history of the area. Some popular activities include night hikes, nature crafts and games, campfire programs, amphibian explorations - all led by that one person!

Smuggler's Notch State Park is best visited from May through October. It is not passable in the winter. Start your adventure at 6443 Mountain Road in Stowe, Vermont. Pets are permitted.
