Olean Juneteenth Celebration
An interesting fact about the July 4th Independence Day celebration, which may be difficult to imagine now, is that enslaved black people were not granted that same freedom until June 19, 1865, after the end of the Civil War. It didn’t happen for them for another 89 years, readers. A lifetime! Can you put yourself in their shoes? Most Americans were free of tyranny; they were not. True, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, but that still did not apply to those enslaved people in the Confederate States. Fact from Statista.com: There were almost 700,000 slaves in the U.S. in 1790, which equated to approximately 18 percent of the total population, or roughly one in every six people.

Nestled against a backdrop of rolling hills coupled with a vibrant downtown, the festival promises to deliver a full bill of live music, one-of-a-kind art, and a patriotic parade of beloved pets.
Summer Music Festival: A Chat with Marc Martel
The music of Queen will fill the air, slope side, on Saturday, July 6th as “One Vision of Queen” takes the stage at this year’s Ellicottville Summer Music Festival. Canadian vocalist, Marc Martel, was born in Montreal and formed his own band, Downhere, in 1999, having success for 13 years, winning five Juno Awards - the highest music award in his native Canada. Since then, Martel has become the lead singer for the critically acclaimed Queen Tribute Band, One Vision of Queen, and tours the globe selling out venues full of die hard Queen and Freddie Mercury fans.
Summer Programs at the Library
They say a book can transport you places, like magic (I concur). So it just makes sense that the place where the books live holds a little power of its own. The Ellicottville Memorial Library is putting that power to good use this summer. With a line-up of fun activities and programs, it’s an excellent way to spend a summer day. Library Director Laura Flanagan took the time to share with us what the library has in store.

Can You Eat too Much Fruit?
Fruit is a key part of a healthy eating plan. Fruits contains many nutrients that your body needs. In fact, a healthy diet that includes fruit has been found to reduce your risk of several chronic diseases. But fruit contains natural sugars, and some types are fairly high in calories. So some people may wonder whether they’re eating too much of it.

Behind the Scenes: Sky High Adventure Park
When I think of summer in Ellicottville, one very specific thing comes to mind: Sky High Adventure Park! I’m not a golfer, I prefer my bike wheels to remain on the pavement, and I can only withstand so many family hikes. Therefore, when heading down to Ellicottville from Buffalo for a beautiful summer weekend, my head is filled with swinging through the trees, zip lining at the speed of light, and bobbing and weaving through tangles of pine on the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster. I’ve done Sky High with my friends and family for years and consider myself quite a fanatic. In planning my adventure for summer 2024, I was very excited to speak with Sky High Director Brian Halloran, and Coordinator Jaimie Woodarek. They told me some awesome behind-the-scenes fast facts and equipped me with everything you and I are going to need to know for this summer at Sky High!
Ellicottville Fine Arts & Crafts Market Expands
Several years ago, Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival used to include an arts component downtown, and now, the Tri-County Arts Council, in partnership with the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, is thrilled to bring this back! Last year’s first annual Ellicottville Fine Art and Craft Market took place during Labor Day weekend and was such a hit that the TCAC approached the Chamber about reprising this event during Labor Day weekend and adding a second weekend during the Summer Music Festival on July 6th and 7th. “We thought, ‘Let’s give people an option before they go over to the hill to listen to some beautiful music to celebrate art in its best fashion,’” said Paula Bernstein, TCAC Executive Director. “We love adding events to Ellicottville. It is a four-season town!”
Spotlight: Genene Crofut & Her Italian Bees
Some of the old-time skiers in the Ellicottville community may remember Joey and Terry Jarosz from the Ellicottville Ski Club, back in “the day.” Their daughters, Genene and Gretchen, were avid skiers and members of the Holiday Valley ski team when Tom Torge taught young athletes the fine art of ski racing. Genene followed her dreams and left ECS to attend boarding high school at The Mountain House School (National Sports Academy) in Lake Placid and finish at Stratton Mountain School in Vermont. Moving on to the University of Colorado, she then relocated to the University of Buffalo to finish her degree in Physical Therapy in 1992, working in acute care and geriatric rehabilitation for ten years. Then Dental School beckoned.
