Holiday Valley & HoliMont Partner Up for New Event
Local skier and podcast personality Adam Sauerwein hosted an “Intro to Uphill Touring” clinic last weekend, adding to the stoke of the upcoming UppenOvr. Photos / @mradamx. It’s almost time to flip the script at Holiday Valley’s UppenOvr event on March 16th! It’s always been ski down, but have you ever appreciated the beauty of Ellicottville along the way? Why not try going up and over? This scenic excursion starts at the Yodeler Lodge and will take you up Sugarplum, over to the beautiful Spruce Lake, then down and back up Sunset at HoliMont! Racers will finish their journey back at Yodeler for an after-party HV style, with music, food, and fun. Not only is it a great way to get out, exercise, and be social, but it’s also for a good cause. Participation contributes to HV’s Empire State Ride Team, directly benefiting Roswell Park Cancer Center.

Shed Those Winter Blues
Sheds come in all sizes, even the smallest ones are exciting to find! Photo / Indrek Kongats. Today marks the end of another month and one step closer to spring. We still have 19 or so days of dreary wintery weather to go through before we get one step closer to summer. Summer, it’s a funny thing how we worship summer as if it’s the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The ironic thing though is that summer is nothing without winter, the Yin and the Yang that makes life, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, so appealing. Imagine a black and white world that’s just grey all the time, a one-season world with nothing to look forward to. I pity all the people south of the Mason-Dixon Line - unimaginable how they stay sane!
Get Ready for An Exciting March
Think about what you did and how you were feeling maybe a week to a week and a half ago, and compare it to how you feel today. Do you notice a difference? Maybe a need to slow down a bit? Perhaps getting tired earlier than usual. Missing earlier times in life and loved ones who have passed. On the positive, you may be quite inspired and your creativity is sparked. This is because the sun, which is our vitality, has left the fast, unemotional, forward-thinking Aquarius part of the sky to the dreamy, intuitive, etheric, creative, and compassionate Pisces. Where Aquarius wants to get things done and refuses to deal with "small minds”, Pisces sees the pure light in everyone, and wants to heal, forgive, and bring people together.
The Legend of Leap Day
You will always remember Leap Year because it goes all the way back to 46 BCE, when Julius Caesar reformed the Roman Calendar. Before that time, a year in Rome was shorter than ours (minus 10 days), divided into lunar months, with an occasional month thrown in to balance things out. To say the least, it was complicated. Ahh, but the Greeks had a calendar based on the sun so with the help of his astronomer, old Julius, who deemed himself one step lower than a god, created a new system. Turns out this guy ended up being so hated for thinking he was untouchable, beyond all mortal beings and could do what he wanted. He demanded so many titles and honors from his Senate that even the kow-towing Senators feared he would try to declare himself king. So, a group of Senators had the situation resolved by simply having him assassinated. Oops, guess he got a tad overly imperial; J.C. permanently left the room.

Bidding a Fond Farewell to a Local Legend
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”. But, then we have this from aboutusps.com: The words above, thought to be the USPS motto, are chiseled in gray granite over the entrance to the New York City Post Office on 8th Avenue and come from Book 8, Paragraph 98, of The Persian Wars by Herodotus. During the wars between the Greeks and Persians (500-449 B.C.), the Persians operated a system of mounted postal couriers who served with great fidelity.
