Distilled & Chilled Music Festival
Who doesn’t like a good music festival? (If you don’t, you may need AARP.) The stage full of great musicians, the good company, the excellent food… so many things to love. The Ellicottville Distillery is ready to bring it on with this year’s 5th Annual Distilled & Chilled Music Festival. EllicottvilleNOW had the chance to speak with event coordinator Nick Kody (of the ever popular Kody and Herren) about what we can expect at this year’s festival.
Nutritious & Delicious
Generally, it’s safe to say that we all love to eat, and it’s also safe to say that maybe we need to eat a little healthier (I know, I know). Where can we go to grab something fulfilling, tasty but not artery clogging? Well, you can always travel down to 4795 US-219 in Great Valley and visit The Reserve Farm Shop.
A Taste of Puerto Rico
Food is one of my many muses and I love trying different cultural offerings. New flavors, exciting dishes, a new view on comfort foods - those are the best things about eating. And now, we can try authentic Puerto Rican recipes in a place close to home. Just a short drive outside of Ellicottville, at 63.5 Main Street in Salamanca, NY, is the new home of Abuela’s Kitchen.

The Art of Proper Breathing
When I get a new client, especially one who is unfamiliar with strength training, I begin by teaching some basics like form, tempo, and breathing. Probably the hardest of the three to teach is breathing. Proper breathing will help you engage your core when you need it the most. Core...
6th Annual “Pump & Run”
At some time or another, we have all made a promise we haven’t kept. In the beautifully imperfect tendencies that are human nature, we are bound to lie. I consider myself a very honest person though, and I always try to be accountable and real with people. My Achilles heel though are the lies I tell myself. And since we’re becoming such good friends, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I have never kept a New Year’s resolution.

While in session students worked diligently to maintain their skills learned during the school year pertaining to reading, math and technology.
New Business Opens at 22 Washington Street
For Jeannine Gicewicz, fondly known as “J9,” there’s just something about Ellicottville – a vibe, if you will – that makes it unlike any other town. “There is an essence, for sure, with the locals and the visitors,” she said. “It’s close-knit, but it involves everybody coming from all over the place.” What better way to reflect Ellicottville’s unique energy than to open a storefront that encompasses everything that’s special about the area? That’s exactly what visitors will find at 22 Washington Street, where Gicewicz’s Good Vibez CBD & Wellness, John Pirrone and Scott DeMott’s Rustic Buffalo, and Terry Norton’s Alpine Attic have come together to provide an experience like no other!

Pediatric Cancer Collaborative.
The Basket Barn
Basket weaving is an art introduced to us at an early age. Perhaps it’s because it is so ageless. While basket weaving is one of the widest spread crafts in the history of any human civilization, no one can say for sure how old, because the natural materials like wood, grass, and animal remains used in making baskets decayed over time. From Wikipedia, we learn that the oldest known baskets were discovered in Faiyum in upper Egypt and have been carbon dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years old, earlier than any established dates for archaeological evidence of pottery vessels, which were too heavy and fragile to suit far-ranging hunter-gatherers. Baskets were a staple item. We needed them throughout civilization. Even through the World Wars, baskets were used for dropping supplies of ammunition and food to the troops.

Breakaway Adventures: Pheasants for Peasants
Tom McCormick pheasant hunting with Bruno, his German Shorthair Pointer. Photo / Indrek Kongats. I had the opportunity to sit down with a friend who is big into hunting pheasants, starting with raising them from chicks to training his German Shorthaired Pointer to hunt them. His name is Tom McCormick and he resides in nearby Bliss, NY. Pheasant hunting is not a sport reserved for kings - in fact, the DEC releases birds every fall for anyone that has the time and inkling to do so.
Four Ellicottville Central Students Awarded
Brooke Butler and Keelin Finn received the Kristen Hintz Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 each. This scholarship, which came under the Foundation’s management in 2017, is named in memory of Kristen Nicole Hintz, who was a senior at Ellicottville Central School and at the top of her class when a tragic auto accident cut her life short in 2000. A leader in her class, she was a multi-sport athlete who always gave her best and persevered through difficult situations. Students applying for this scholarship must include an essay that describes and explains what characteristics and qualities he/she possesses that makes him/her deserving of this scholarship, including information that reflects how they demonstrate kindness and perseverance, qualities for which Kristen was known. Butler will study mathematics at Clarkson University. Finn will study biology at Gannon University.
