Lawrence school board approves maximum budget for 2024-25, including slight property tax rate increase
Property taxes will slightly rise with the increase of the Lawrence school district’s mill levy this year, which the school board initially approved Monday. With a vote of 6-0, board members on Monday unanimously approved the district’s maximum budget for publication for the 2024-25 year. The tentative new mill levy is 52.252, which is a .042-mill increase over last year’s approved rate of 52.210.

Kansas State Fair adds lighting to parking lots
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair will have new lighting in the parking lots of the grounds this year to help fairgoers feel more safe. "We are doing two things in the parking lots this year," Kansas State Fair general manager Bryan Schulz said. "We added the cameras, plus we're increasing the lighting out in the parking lot. JJ’s Star Spangled Salute: A Halstead Native Serves His Country In The Navy
Today, we salute Lt. Cmdr. Michael Flanigan. Michael, a native of Halstead, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Michael graduated from Halstead High School in 2005. He graduated from Kansas State University in 2010. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Halstead. Michael said, ““Growing up, I learned that if you want something, you have to work hard for it.” Michael joined the Navy 14 years ago. Today, he serves as a pilot and maintenance officer for the squadron, flying an EA-18G Growler – a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft and the cornerstone of the naval Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) mission. Thank you for making Halstead proud Michael and THANK YOU for your service.
