ELLWOOD CITY ― At the borough's McDonald’s, every Friday is Red Shirt Friday.

This Friday many businesses and individuals will honor veterans who serve overseas by wearing red shirts or pins for Memorial Day weekend, but Ellwood City McDonald’s manager Kim Gallaher is enthusiastic about the store's continuing support of veterans by wearing red every Friday.

Showing support for the Armed Forces is a very old tradition. The acronym RED is an abbreviation for Remember Everyone Deployed. The tradition is based on the idea that the color red symbolizes courage, bravery and the sacrifices made by soldiers.

It is an easy way to raise awareness and show support for the men and women who sacrifice their time away from family and friends to serve their country, Gallaher said.

Not only businesses, but individuals can show their support by wearing a red shirt, tie or lapel pin on Fridays. It is an optional and informal way to honor our military for their service, Gallaher said.
