An Elm City man has been charged with insurance fraud by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

An Elm City man has been charged with felony insurance fraud according to a statement from N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.

Jason Dale Osborne, 47, of 106 S. Branch St. in Elm City, turned himself in last week.

Osborne was fingerprinted and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Osborne appeared in Wilson County District Court on Tuesday, June 11.

“According to special agents with the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Osborne obtained an automobile policy of $100,000 after the vehicle that he claimed had been involved in a motor vehicle collision,” the N.C. Department of Insurance statement read.

Osborne provided the fraudulent claim on Feb. 14, according to the arrest warrant.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

According to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction offender public information website, Osborne was convicted of two counts of false state insurance benefits in February for offenses on March 1 and April 18 last year.

Residents who suspect insurance fraud or other white collar crimes should make an anonymous report by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684. More information is available at www.ncdoi.gov .
