The mini mural and sculpture garden in Elm City will showcase diverse sculptures by talented artists from North Carolina and beyond. Individual freestanding art panels will be thoughtfully placed throughout the garden complex, providing an inspiring canvas for artists to express their creativity through painting.

The wall on South Broad and Main streets in Elm City will soon display a mural depicting Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer Harvey Reid in celebration of Elm City’s rich basketball history. That comes courtesy of a grant from Wilson Arts and the Oliver Nestus Freeman Round House and African American Museum.

This mural will define the spirit of Elm City’s enthusiasm for sports. Lift the viewers’ spirits and inspire them to reach that higher bar. This mural is planned for the former Cobb Furniture building on Main and Broad in Elm City. Along with the murals, a sculpture scheduled for the corner of the building will be attached to the second-floor artist’s loft space. The sculpture garden and mini mural space behind the building will feature seating and tables for guests.

What’s a sculpture garden, and what good are they? The primary purpose is to promote sculptors and give them a venue to show their works. In a small town, that may seem quirky and out of place. Property owners come from all walks of life. Some may feel a great need to invest in a small town. It could be personal or financial. Artists often seek out small towns best suited to their financial situation. Staring a sculpture garden for an artist may be a precursor for an art gallery.

A sculpture garden can be a great place to visit. If the artist decides on a gallery, adding a coffeehouse/sandwich shop is even more beneficial to the small town. If the artist is well-connected in the art world and has an incredible resume, a place to start becomes vital to change in a small community.

No matter how small, a sculpture garden with the right operator can be an excellent attraction for the city. A lot depends on the art chosen for a sculpture garden as well as the artists selected to display their works. The best way to think of a sculpture garden is that it grows art.
