This story was updated to add Chemung County and Schuyler County’s cooling stations. Chemung County Legislator Rodney Strange announced that Chemung County now has cooling stations with a Facebook post on Monday evening. Schuyler County Public Health announced that Schuyler County has cooling stations in a release on Tuesday morning.

SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. ( WETM ) — As temperatures hit upwards of 90 degrees across the region, people might find themselves needing to seek shelter from the extreme heat.

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) recommends spending at least a few hours in air conditioning every day during hot weather to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Those who don’t have air-conditioned homes can take a break from the heat by visiting cooling centers. Cooling centers are facilities that offer a place to stay cool during extreme heat and can include places like libraries, community centers, and schools.

Depending on which county they live in, Twin Tiers residents might have a hard time finding cooling centers. Bradford and Tioga counties in the Northern Tier don’t have cooling stations. Tioga County, New York, Chemung County, Schuyler County and Steuben County residents do have the option to visit cooling centers: Tioga has 10 cooling centers, Chemung has 8, Schuyler has 5 and Steuben has 17.

The DOH advises people to call cooling stations before going to make sure they’re open. Most of the Southern Tier’s cooling stations are libraries, and they may be closed for the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday, June 19.

If you need to escape the heat and a cooling center isn’t available near you, the DOH recommends visiting public libraries, supermarkets, malls, or community swimming pools.

A list of Southern Tier cooling stations, their hours, and contact numbers (when available) can be found below:
