An Elmira man was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Zachary T. Van Horn last week.

Elmira city police Thursday arrested 27-year-old Marcus A. Jones-Snyder, charging him with second-degree murder in the June 20 slaying of Van Horn at 417 Grove St. in the city.

Officials said Jones-Snyder is currently being held in custody. Information about an arraignment or pending court appearances were not immediately available.

Police initially received a report of a gunshot victim on the 400 block of Grove Street at about 5 p.m. on June 20. Emergency personnel located Van Horn with a gunshot injury. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at the facility.

Elmira police said Jones-Snyder was developed as a suspect during the shooting probe and investigators and patrol officers "worked tirelessly to locate (him)."

Elmira Police thanked the public for its help in tracking down the suspect.

The Elmira Police Department said it is still actively investigating the incident and anyone with information is requested to call (607) 737-5626 or leave a message on the anonymous tip line at (607) 271-HALT.

Elmira authorities also recognized the assistance of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the Bath Police Department, the Hornell Police Department, Painted Post Police and New York State Police
