ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM ) –While many people got to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, others did not. Instead, they are recovering from tragedy.

Eldridge Park is where many people come to make happy memories. But for 10-year-old Serenity Roloson, one bad memory outweighs all of the good ones. Roloson and her family went to Party in the Park on Sunday when tragedy struck.

“She was going down to see her friend and hug her friend, and I seen the car coming and I yelled. Dad yelled and it scared her enough to turn to try to get stopped and it caused her to fall so she went down on her knee, and if the woman had been paying attention and not on her cell phone, she would’ve seen it and been able to stop in time,” said Roloson’s mother, Christina Collins.

Collins says that a manager of Eldridge Park was on her phone and driving when she ran over her daughter’s foot.

“She was told by four people before she hit my daughter to slow down. And she was actually still on her phone when she got out of the car, so she wasn’t too concerned with what she had done.”

Roloson was excited to cheer this year, but now her hopes are crushed. She has had three surgeries so far and is in Dansville receiving care.

“They’re talking months of recovery. It’s been a traumatizing experience for her,” Collins added.

With a long road of recovery ahead, Roloson and Collins are grateful for the love and support from the community.

“I appreciate the support we received while we were there and the people that took the time to make sure that my other children were OK. I appreciate the support and the people that run over immediately to help her.”

Roloson’s family has setup a GoFundMe page to help with transportation costs.
