An Elmira man was charged with attempted murder after police say he stabbed another man during an altercation.

Around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 400 block of West Clinton Street for a reported assault, according to the Elmira Police Department.

Arriving officers located the 33-year-old male victim, whose name was not released, with stab wounds to his neck. He was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment and is listed in critical but stable condition, police said.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested John Havens, 33, of Elmira and charged him with second-degree attempted murder, a felony. Police did not offer a motive for the attack.
