    Pios split doubleheader with Newark, NYCBL scoreboard

    ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Elmira Pioneers split a home doubleheader with Newark, while the Hornell Steamers earned their 9th straight win.

    Elmira earned a bounce back win over Newark, on Saturday. After beginning their weekend doubleheader with a 14-3 loss to the Pilots, the Pios responded with a shutout victory in the nightcap, 6-0.

    In Game 2 of the twin bill, Elmira delivered a balanced offensive attack, seeing RBI’s from 4 different players. The Pios opened the scoring in the 2nd, on a stand-up RBI-triple, from Manuel Castro. One inning later, Elmira scored on a wild play in foul territory, as Aidan Grabowski beat a throw home from behind the plate. Patrick Ward followed up with an RBI-single, on a Pilots’ error.

    In the 5th, Elmira added 2 more runs, as Evan Blanchard and Andy Schroeder crossed the plate. Once again, the Pioneers added to the total in the following frame, on an RBI-single from Max LaLime. Garrett Rochon backed the Pios offense from the mound, tossing a 5-hitter, with 7 strikeouts.

    The Pioneers stay at home for a Sunday matchup with Auburn. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m.

    In the NYCBL, the Hornell Steamers won their 9th straight game, while the Horseheads Hitmen took a hard fought loss. Hornell defeated the Salamanca Lizards 7-3, to extend their lead atop of the league.

    In Olean, the Oilers rebounded to walk-off the Hitmen 10-9. Despite the loss, Horseheads grad Matt Procopio delivered 3 RBI, including a 2-run home run. Anthony Franco added to Procopio’s effort with 3 additional RBI, while Michael Siano went (3-3) with 2 runs.

    Horseheads is slated for a Sunday doubleheader against Genesee, with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m. Hornell will next look for a 10th straight victory, as they travel to Dansville on Sunday, at 5 p.m.
