ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – A former Elmira Pioneer is heading to professional baseball.

University of Kentucky second basemen Emilien Pitre was selected in the second round at 58th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft Sunday. The Wildcat junior played for the Pioneers during the 2021 season.

The Third-Team All-American and native of Canada is primed to compete at the next level representing the Pioneers and Kentucky on the big stage.

Pitre starred in the field and committed only two errors in 255 fielding attempts for a .992 percentage this season. At the plate, Pitre batted .301 with 10 home runs, 58 RBI, 47 walks with 20 doubles and 26 stolen bases.

As the number two hitter, Pitre was a true spark in the lineup who paced Kentucky. In 2021, Pitre hit .250 in 68 at bats with 13 RBI to go song with five doubles for the Pioneers that summer.
