ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Thousands of people are still without power in the Southern Tier due to Monday’s severe storms, and food spoilage becomes a big issue with the power being out after several days. Some customers without power may be in luck as NYSEG might cover the cost of food that had to be thrown away.

According to NYSEG, a food/prescription medication spoilage compensation credit is available to residential and small business customers who are without power for 72 consecutive hours from widespread prolonged outages impacting 20,000 customers or more.

Reimbursement may also be available for residents with spoiled prescription medication up to the actual value of the medication when the claim is provided with an itemized list of the lost items and proof of loss.

Small business customers can see reimbursements up to $540 when the claim is provided with an itemized list and proof of the loss.
