With profound sadness, I write to inform you of the untimely passing of Allen Drake, a dedicated member of our school community, new IRCSD Board Member, retired IRCSD teacher, and friend to many. Allen’s sudden departure has left us all in shock and sorrow, especially given the recent passing of his beloved grandson and IRHS student Jordan Drake fewer than two months ago. During this difficult time, our hearts go out to Allen’s family, friends, and loved ones.

Each year the names of our community’s fallen are spoken on Memorial Day during the ceremony at the waterfront. Because of such rainy weather these events were canceled so their names were not spoken. We want to be sure our heroes are not forgotten.

Nancy McKay Campbell
Nancy McKay Campbell, 85, of Harbor Springs, passed away on May 4th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, after bravely confronting brain cancer. Born and raised in Evanston, IL, Nancy graduated from Barat College in 1960 and embarked on a fulfilling career teaching high school math. Her journey took a beautiful turn when she met and married Burke Duncan Campbell in 1963 at St. Athanasius Church in Evanston, Illinois.
James A. Cooke
James A. (“Jim”) Cooke died at his home in Niwot, Colorado on June 7, 2024 as the result of complications of Type 1 diabetes. It is impossible to fully capture a life in a few paragraphs but certain things were essentially and authentically Jim and will be mourned and missed by all. Jim lived life exuberantly, always willing to open his heart, home and office to friends and those in need. Whether tending to his garden cooking for friends and family, skiing, sailing in Harbor Springs, listening to live music, or whole-heartedly loving his family – you knew when Jim was in the room.

Jessica Elaine Peyton
Mrs. Jessica Elaine Peyton, 39 of Lewiston, Michigan died suddenly on June 29, 2024 at McLaren Bay Region of West Branch. She was born in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada on July 12, 1984 to Brendan and Mona (Musgrave) Hawley. She celebrated 10 years of marriage with her husband, Sam Peyton. She was a loving mother to their daughter, Braelyn, who was her greatest joy. Jessica graduated from Fort Plain High School in 2002 and went on to pursue her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, graduating in 2008. She was a member of North Life Church in Gaylord and worked as a teacher’s aide for Johannesburg-Lewiston Elementary School. She loved camping, boating on West Twin Lake, puzzles, ancestry, and her dog, Tank. Jessica was kind and compassionate and she deeply loved her family, her school kids, and her tribe. She will be greatly missed.
