National Weather Service in Far, Remote Northern Michigan Took Over Warning Chicago as Illinois Forecasters Hunkered Down During Tornado Outbreak
The National Weather Service is the government agency we all rely upon for up-to-the-second information particularly in emergency situations like severe thunderstorms and tornado outbreaks. But what happens when NWS forecasters are in the line of fire for a storm? That was the situation facing the NWS office in Chicago last night (July 15, 2024) as a summer storm spawned a tornado outbreak across the region.

New roof for Charlevoix City Hall among 7 historic preservation projects to win grants in Michigan
What’s happening: Historic preservation projects in the communities of Charlevoix and Coldwater are among seven such projects to receive a total of $250,000 in grants from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), it was recently announced. The awards were made possible by the federal Historic Preservation Fund-Certified Local Government (CLG) program as administered by the SHPO.

Voters have four candidates to consider for next probate judge
GAYLORD — Voters in the Aug. 6 primary will select one of four candidates to become the next probate judge in the 46th Circuit Court for Otsego County. The current judge, Michael Cooper, who has served since being appointed by Gov. John Engler in 2000, is retiring. Courtney Cadotte, David Delaney, Kevin Hesselink and Paul Slough are running to replace Cooper.

Johanna Lee, 93, of Lewiston
Mrs. Johanna Lee, 93 of Lewiston, Michigan passed in her home on Friday, July 12, 2024. She was born in Fenton, Michigan on November 23, 1930. She married Lyle, the love of her life, on October 21, 1947. The two never left each other’s side for 76 years. She loved her family very much and served many holiday dinners for them all. She was always involved in what was happening in their lives. Never sitting still for a moment could be used to describe Johanna. She had many cleaning and washing window jobs on her list for the day. She enjoyed walks in the woods and nature. She was a loving and kind person and enjoyed talking with people, especially children. Johanna was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Lewiston. She gave her talents for over 30 years ranging from watching children in the nursery to teaching Sunday school. She also served on the Board of Diaconate. Her bubbly personality will be greatly missed.
