Prince William and Kate Middleton were seen together in a rare public appearance, hinting at the couple’s return to official duties after their private summer break.

Prince William, known for his traditionally clean-shaven visage, appeared at Crathie Kirk church near Balmoral Castle on August 25 without his summer beard. 

This unexpected grooming choice caught many off guard, especially after his recent, albeit short-lived, embrace of facial hair.

On August 11, the Prince of Wales and his wife, Kate Middleton, made headlines when they appeared with beards in a video congratulating Great Britain’s Olympic athletes. 

The sight of Prince William’s beard was a notable departure from his usual look, given that it had been 16 years since he was last seen with facial hair in public.

The beard seemed to be a playful nod to the summer season and a rare deviation from his clean-shaven norm.

The royal family typically enjoys a private retreat from public duties during the summer, with a brief hiatus from official engagements.

In contrast, Prince Harry’s consistent preference for beards has been a notable aspect of his public image. Harry has maintained a beard, a choice that once sparked a disagreement with William over royal grooming standards. 

According to Harry’s memoir "Spare," there was tension over beard regulations, particularly when Harry was allowed to keep his beard for his wedding to Meghan Markle—a privilege not extended to William at the time.

As the Prince of Wales prepares for a return to his royal duties, including an upcoming visit to a London art gallery and the resumption of public engagements, his clean-shaven look may signal a shift back to formality after his brief dalliance with facial hair.
