ENDICOTT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local manufacturer that was one of IBM’s original suppliers of magnetic coils is celebrating its 70-year anniversary.

The Endicott Coil Company was established in 1954, manufacturing coils for IBM circuit boards.

Over the years, the company has widened its scope, and now does business in the military, aerospace, and nuclear industries.

For over seven decades, Endicott Coil has been in the same facility on Charlotte Street in Binghamton.

President Ralph Coon says they manufacture everything from small, $4 copper coils, to the 90-pound coils that operate the fuel rods in nuclear power plants.

“It basically makes components for either circuit boards or some of the different solenoids that are out there. So, a copper coil that is used for either inductance, resistance or sometimes to move things, which is the electromagnetic properties of coils. So, it’s basically an old sub-supplier to IBM,” said Coon.

Coon says the facility ships around 4,000 units each week.

He says back in the IBM days, the company was pumping out greater volumes of product, but now, each order is more customizable.

Coon says one of the clients is Space X, and their coils are used in the aerospace company’s Starlink system.
