Biden exit: Western NC Democrats back Harris and Gov. Cooper or Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly
Many Western North Carolina Democratic officials did not immediately comment on the stunning decision of President Joe Biden not to run again. But of those who spoke out, they said they would have supported Biden in the race, but also supported his decision to step aside. They agreed with the one-term Democratic president's tapping of Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement − though they split on the choice for second-in-command between North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly.

Wanda Marie Scroggs Hampton
Wanda Marie Scroggs Hampton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, surrounded by her family and those who dearly loved her at Autumn Care of Waynesville, North Carolina. Wanda exhibited strength, grace, and dignity in everything she did, even in her last moments. She was ready to join her Savior and see her husband and sons again. She lived a life well-lived for 95 and a half years, and she often said, “It’s been a good run.” She was a strong woman who overcame many obstacles, saying “We just did the best we could.” She genuinely loved those she met and tried to help people in any way she could, whether by sending cards, sharing her resources, providing food or clothing, praying for others, or offering encouragement. She loved the Lord and followed Jesus’ example in how she lived her daily life. Even strangers could see the love of Jesus shining through her. Wanda exemplified the Proverbs 31 Woman.

Valley Rewind: Shope's Dairy auction, 1951
In this photo, we find ourselves peering into a moment of significant change: the 1951 auction at Shope's Dairy in Swannanoa. This marked the end of an era for Shope, as his land was sold to the Swiss Oerlikon Tool and Arms Corporation. The land itself had a storied past, first settled by the Alexander family in the late 1700s, and had seen several owners before Chemtronics acquired it in 1978. Chemtronics transformed the land into a production site for hallucinogenic chemical warfare agents and tear gas. Though Chemtronics eventually ceased operations, the legacy of its activities lingered on. The area was declared a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, rendering it unusable due to dangerously high levels of organic compounds, heavy metals, and dissolved solids. In 2013, the local community took a stand against this legacy of pollution. A community advisory board was formed with the mission of cleaning up the site, aiming to restore the land that had once thrived. This photo captures more than an auction — it captures a pivotal moment in the land's ongoing story.

Letter: Compassion first would benefit everyone
[Regarding “Traveling Mercies: Churches Welcome Homeless Families in Safe Shelter Initiative,” July 3, Xpress:]. As someone who volunteers weekly to work with the homeless, I can tell you several things. First of all, none of these people want to be homeless. Secondly, all homeless people have one thing in common: They have suffered trauma that they can’t overcome. And third, many of the homeless people who receive help and get back on their feet are the next wave of volunteers to help others in the same situation.
