Sean Wang cast a familiar muse in his directorial feature debut: his grandmother. One of the two subjects of his Oscar-nominated documentary short Nai Nai & Wài Pó, Chang Li Hua makes her dramatic acting debut in her grandson’s Dìdi, an affecting dramedy about the pains of growing up. She plays Nai Nai, the formidable paternal grandmother of protagonist Chris (Izaac Wang), a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy coming of age during those final idle days of summer in the suburbs of Fremont, Calif., circa 2008, before he enters high school.
