DeSantis Scraps University Sociology: Threat to Right-Wing Agenda

Ron DeSantis apparently doesn't understand sociology, or like it being taught in college. Educators in Florida are warning that enrollment will plummet under the new orders.

“Sociology is the scientific study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior, which are at the core of civic literacy."

The sociology courses are being replaced by a (presumably right-wing) history curriculum which will include a " historically accurate" account of slavery, according to the Governor's hand picked board of education.

Florida education commissioner and staunch DeSantis acolyte Manny Díaz insisted without evidence sociology classes had “been hijacked by leftwing activists,” follows several other recent “anti-woke” moves in education in Florida.

Colleges and universities, with their researchers and thinkers, are by nature more inclined to be liberal in thought, that is somewhat the purpose of higher education, to question existing processes and societies.

(Higher education is not just the pursuit of facts, it differs from indoctrination for the purpose of turning out corporate drones, in my opinion.)

“Students of sociology are better informed and more likely to be engaged citizens, "armed with the power to destabilize right-wing policy makers’ agendas, and this is the threat these regulations seek to neutralize.”

Last years takeover by DeSantis of a liberal arts college in Sarasota, where 40% of the staff have since left, and many undergraduates dropped out or transferred, was another attempt to control thought in Florida, molding it into right-wing thought factories, or in the words of Diaz: “Florida’s higher education system will focus on preparing students for high-demand, high-wage jobs, not woke ideology.”

Small wonder DeSantis plan to make America Florida was not well received.
