The CEO of Kelloggs, Gary Pinnick, has advice for consumers who are stunned by high food prices and continuing rises. Cereal for dinner. With spending on food at 11.1% of the family budget, the highest since 1991, many families are struggling to put dinner on the table.

Pilnick said the company was advertising cereal for dinner to consumers looking for more affordable options. “Give chicken the night off,” the ad’s cheery tagline reads. WK Kellogg owns cereals such as Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran and others.

The suggestion prompted a backlash on social media, saying cereal is not a substitute for a balanced meal, and that the price of most breakfast cereals has risen 12 to 18% and is now more than $7 dollars a box.

What happens when consumers can't afford cereal? Ketchup soup, anyone?
