Family Dollar, the beleaguered retail store chain which offers discount merchandise to low income buyers, is closing roughly 1,000 of their stores. The chain was acquired in 2015 by Dollar Tree Brand, with the intention of competing with Walmart and Dollar General. It saw some resurgence in business after many traditional retailers closed their doors, and the middle-class began to shrink.

Dollar stores are found in big cities and also in rural areas where they drove out more traditional mom & pop type general stores, or that were too small to support a larger retailer.

Recent new of a rodent infested warehouse of Family dollar which prompted the largest criminal penalty to date related to food safety, of $41.6 million dollars. Many Family Dollars also experienced health and safety concerns at the store locations for employees and workers are also common.

Dollar Tree also plans to close about 30 stores under that name as their leases expire, after suffering a loss of $1.71 billion dollars last year.
