Man Shot Through a Bible During Rampage Yelling "I Am God"

Jason Kaercher, 26, of Gainesville, was meeting with his family and a Department of Children and Families (DCF) case manager in Melrose, Florida.

During a break when he and the family members went outside the building, the case manager went outside after hearing screaming. Kaercher was squeezing the baby hard enough to turn the child blue.after which he began walking toward the road, saying he was “God” while holding the baby and a Bible.

"A family member grabbed a shovel and tried to convince him to release the baby. He then laid down on the roadway on top of the child and Bible. Eventually, he got up and the family member grabbed the baby."

Several vehicles had stopped to avoid hitting Kaercher, one of which was a work crew, who attempted to hold him down. Kaercher got away, grabbed the shovel the family member had dropped and jumped on a vehicle, smashing the windshield.

He then attacked a man in a truck, breaking his arm with the shovel. That driver was able to grab his gun and shot the approaching Kaercher, who was holding a bible up in front of him, multiple times through the book and striking his chest. Kaercher was airlifted to a trauma center, the baby went to a pediatric hospital. and the driver will not face charges. Police said the shooting was in self defense.
