Grand Island, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia is warning the public about a new twist to the “gift card” scam targeting residents. According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, a Grand Island woman received a call from someone claiming to be from the DEA. The caller alleged that a vehicle registered to the woman was involved in smuggling 22 pounds of cocaine across the U.S.-Mexico border and demanded four $500 gift cards. The woman did not comply and reported the incident to authorities.

Springville Man Sentenced to 35 Years in Prison for Producing Child Pornography
A registered sex offender from southern Erie County who was convicted of production of child pornography has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced the sentence Friday for 37-year-old Charles Porterfield of Springville. Prosecutors say Porterfield paid a 13-year-old girl to engage in an online sexual relationship and used the teenager to produce images and videos of child pornography. This occurred less than one month after completing a sentence of five years in prison and three years post-release supervision that resulted from a 2011 conviction in Erie County Court of 2nd-degree engaging in a course of sexual conduct. The sentencing was the result of an investigation by the FBI and the Northern York County Regional Police Department in Pennsylvania.
