Arkansas ribs eatery wins Rib Off for fourth straight year
Both the judges and the general public voted for repeat favorites in this year’s 40th edition of The Blade’s Northwest Ohio Rib Off. Porky Chicks BBQ, based in Fayetteville, Ark., won the judges’ choice top prize for the fourth year in a row and fifth time overall, with the non-consecutive victory having been in 2015. And O’Henrys Kitchen on Wheels, a Toledo-based food truck run by Keith Henry, took home the people’s choice award for the second straight year. Mark Grant, owner of Porky Chicks, said his kitchen had never before carried a rib show four straight years, and he plans to be back to try for five in 2025.

Art on the Mall showcases craftsmanship and creativity in Toledo
The University of Toledo’s Centennial Mall burgeoned Sunday for the 31st year with small tents — each one providing a shady refuge and intimate insight into a unique artistic world. Michelle Opaczewski, a Toledo native, started crocheting over 40 years ago when she was just 12 years old. “It’s my sanity,” she said, a smile sprouting from her lips. Her tent was one of 121 featured at Art on the Mall, the annual Toledo art show. The event featured artists from across the country and showed off artworks including photography, jewelry, painting, metallurgy, ceramics, and more — all for sale at individual artists’ booths.
Toledo Jeep Fest expected to draw 72,000
It’s almost the time when Jeeps and Jeepers take over downtown Toledo to celebrate the city’s iconic product. The four-day Toledo Jeep Fest kicks off at 3 p.m. Thursday with a Jeep off-road course welcome party and concludes on Sunday afternoon. Between the start and finish, the major events at the festival include an indoor exhibit at Glass City Center with 100 vehicles on display, a parade of Jeeps, a rock-crawling course, a Jeep-themed four-mile run and one-mile walk, a block party thrown by the Glass City Crawlers, and a free concert by Mark Farner’s American Band. And since Jeeps are built by union workers, it’s fitting that one of the participants in the event’s parade will be United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain. “We started Toledo Jeep Fest right here in my office,” said UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower. “It was such a great idea for Toledo that years ago we raised $30,000 in five minutes. And look how it’s grown since then.”
Out-of-the-Way Michigan Pizzeria Gets Love For its Well Worn Exterior
There's something about a faded exterior of a pizza place that screams, "the pizza is so good and we've been around so long, don't worry what it looks like, just get inside." That may be the case with Detroit Beach Pizza north of Monroe on the shores of Lake Erie.
Crisis averted at the Wood Co. Fair Milkshake Barn
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - It was a close call for thewood County Clover Legacy Foundation and 4-H club at the Wood County Fairgrounds. The team learned their water was set to be shut off, which would’ve left 700 tubs of ice cream at the milkshake barn to melt and go sour. With some quick thinking and the generosity of some local business owners there will be milkshakes at the fair this weekend.

House of Dow connects all types of shoppers with sustainable fashion
Nestled into a corner of Adams Street is a boutique doing more than just selling hand-picked vintage clothing: it is fighting clothes waste and bolstering locals in the community, one garment at a time. “It's crazy: the amount of fashion waste there is and it only gets worse,” Alan Dow, founder and owner of the boutique, House of Dow, said. “I'm always trying to seek out stuff like organic fabrics, linens, and cottons because it lasts forever, but also breaks down in the landfills way faster [than synthetic fabrics].” House of Dow opened nearly eight years ago, under the vision of Alan Dow — a Toledo native who was inspired to open the store by fond memories of shopping for old clothing items with his mother at estate sales as he grew up. Dow is still frequenting estate sales, only now, it’s his livelihood. “I'm always trying to find unusual and standout things, so I will go out and go to sales or estates and buy things,” he said. “We usually bring back car-loads at a time.”
Hendel: Where to soak up the summer during patio season
SUMMER, which started June 20, is in full swing. In fact, we are going to hit the halfway point here in a couple weeks — the last day is Sept. 22. There's so much to do outdoors from golf, tennis, and pickleball, to baseball, biking, walking in the park, outdoor concerts, roller skating, swimming, boating, old time drive-in movies, shopping at farmers markets, art fairs, and more. Among the fun times are dining al fresco. Your backyard grill is nice but there are many restaurants around the area that have outdoor patios and you can let them do the cooking while you sip your favorite beverage and feast on your favorite foods.
