An unexpected release of cooking oil on Thursday night shut down a portion of a major Erie artery through much of Friday.

The Bayfront Parkway between Port Access Road and East Sixth Street was closed until 8:20 pm. on Friday due to the spill, which was reported shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday, according to Erie County 911.

A truck hauling cooking oil lost its cargo, causing the spill, according to Erie police. There was no reported accident associated with the spill, police reported.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation issued an alert about the spill and the closure of the stretch of the Bayfront Parkway early Friday morning.

PennDOT said the parkway reopened at 8:20 p.m.
