Corry High School wrestler Mason Savitz joins elite company by reaching this milestone

CORRY — Mason Savitz won’t forget his District 10 semifinal match.

The Corry wrestler pinned Sharpsville’s Josh Divens 3:40 into their 172-pound bout, sending Savitz into the Class 2A finals. More importantly, though, it was Savitz’s 100th career win, the first of Corry’s budding group of stars to reach the coveted milestone.

When the referee’s hand slapped the mat and raised Savitz’s palm into the air, the junior felt the love of his teammates.

“It was unreal. I was super excited and I’ve been looking forward to it,” Savitz said. “That sums it up.”

Savitz, the reigning Section 1 champion at 172 and a two-time regional medalist, joined an elite list of 100-match winners in Erie County’s history.

    Lifelong journey

Savitz didn’t fall in love with wrestling at first. He started around first grade, he said, but didn’t grow warm to the sport until junior high, where he won a state medal.

His brother, Hunter, and father, Steve, have pushed him through adversity. He’s also benefitted from the recent arrival of assistant coach Austin Gillihan, a 100-match winner for Corry who has helped Savitz move his feet and wrestle fluidly.

“I like to wrestle freely,” Savitz said. “I don’t like to be stagnant.”

    More work to be done

Savitz was the 172-pound runner-up at districts a week after he beat Fort LeBoeuf’s Ryan Welka for the Section 1 title. He was sixth at regionals as a freshman and fifth as a sophomore, and he’ll try to best that at the Class 2A Northwest tournament March 1-2.

Savitz carries a 35-6 record this season. He was 37-16 as a freshman and 28-10 during an injury-riddled sophomore campaign.

With another year-plus to wrestle, Savitz is far from finished. Michael Pollard’s school record of 144 wins is within reach.

“You’ve got to put your head down and grind,” Savitz said. “There’s no way around it. It’s not an easy goal or an easy task but you need to just grind it out.”
