Joining him were Erie Mayor Joe Schember; Rachel Petty, weatherization coordinator for the Erie County Housing Authority; Aaron Snippert, executive director of the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Erie; and PennEnvironment Executive Director Dave Masur. They celebrated climate progress and energy-efficiency investments delivered through the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. </p><nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate><p> "We want to make sure folks know that there are options to lower their energy bills by plugging into clean energy and making energy-efficiency retrofits," Zaidi said. "That we're making progress as a country and unprecedented expansion in American energy production over the last three and a half years. And that there are jobs to be had: 250,000 created just last year to do this important work." </p><p><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=02lfzU_0vCyNfv600" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=02lfzU_0vCyNfv600" width="1049" height="589" ></p><nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate><h2 class="presto-h2 wp-block-heading"> Clean energy jobs </h2><p> He cited the newly released 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report from the U.S. Department of Energy. The report said 56% of those 250,000 new energy workforce jobs were in clean energy and, for the first time ever, unionization rates in clean energy, at 12.4%, surpassed the rate in traditional energy employment of 10.5%. </p><p> "Here in Pennsylvania, that translates to 5% growth in clean-energy jobs," Zaidi said. He said the Keystone State has a "robust energy sector" that includes Erie, where the next generation of electric locomotives is being manufactured. </p><p> "We've got two options when it comes to power," Zaidi said. "Power that puts pollution into the sky and power that keeps our air clean. And I think we owe it to our kids, we owe it to future generations to lead on clean power." </p><nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate><p> He said the United States can lead the world on clean-energy technologies and that more than 100 factories have been announced in the past three and a half years to manufacture new energy technologies in America. </p><p> "It's a way to provide lower cost, reliable, resilient power that doesn't put pollution in the sky," Zaidi said. </p><p></p><iframe height="476" src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Factonclimateus%2Fvideos%2F849300227304818%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0" width="100%"></iframe><h2 class="presto-h2 wp-block-heading"> In the City of Erie </h2><nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate><p> Schember spoke about the effect of extreme weather due to climate change. </p><p> "These extreme conditions impact energy demand, utility costs and put a strain on all municipal resources," the mayor said. "We applaud the federal investment that helps Erie families because now, more than ever, it is vital that our community lives in homes that are weatherized appropriately and to make them safer and more efficient. </p><p> "In the City of Erie, we are committed to programs and initiatives that positively support our environment. ... We know that reducing our carbon footprint can help. Last year, we installed a unique solar energy system at our Central Fire Station that proves 100% of that station's power and makes the Erie Fire Department one of the few to combine solar energy with battery storage for backup emergency power. We are also replacing five diesel garbage trucks with five energy-efficient effective EV trucks. And the City of Erie continues to expand our bikeway system, which offers residents a safer lower-carbon alternative mode for transportation in the City of Erie. But there is more to be done." </p><nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate><p> Zaidi, who moved to the Edinboro area from Pakistan when he was 5 years old, was to visit the Erie fire station later in the day.
