Two years ago, the future seemed bleak for Marco and Amanda Aranzullo’s proposed cannabis dispensary in Northampton. The husband-wife team went through all the initial motions required of entrepreneurs hoping to sell legal marijuana: They identified a retail location, began discussions with the city and scheduled a public meeting to hear comments from residents.
Campus-wide Fire Hydrant Flushing Underway
Facilities and Campus Services is currently performing an annual flushing of campus fire hydrants. The hydrant flushing, which began July 8 and will continue for approximately five weeks, will be performed weekdays from 4-7 a.m. and 3-9 p.m., and on Saturdays from 4-7 a.m. Hydrants on the perimeter of the campus will be flushed during the morning, and those at the center of campus will be flushed during the late afternoon/early evening.
Springfield DPW starting trash collections early to beat the heat
SPRINGFIELD — The Department of Public Works will be starting trash, recycling and yard waste collections at 6 a.m. to beat the heat on Wednesday. Trash that is not placed on the curb by 6 a.m. will be left, as garbage workers will not be returning later for additional pickups. The department thanked residents for their understanding and help to reduce the time employees have to work in the high heat.

Officials identify victim in deadly Holyoke shooting
HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The victim of the shooting on West Street in Holyoke has been identified as 38-year-old Dexter Ortiz of Holyoke. On July 9, just before midnight, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation. When they arrived, they found Ortiz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
