ERWIN, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Town of Erwin announced that it was designated as a New York State Pro-Housing Community.

New York State started its Pro-Housing Community program last July to reward local governments that are working to address the state’s housing crisis. Pro-Housing Community certified municipalities are eligible to apply for funding programs that other municipalities don’t have access to.

The Town of Erwin says that this new certification recognizes the town’s commitment to providing affordable, accessible, and diverse housing to everyone. According to the town, Erwin achieved its pro-housing status by implementing inclusive zoning practices, partnering with local developers, and supporting housing organizations.

“Being designated as a Pro Housing Community is a tremendous honor for the Town of Erwin,” said Deputy Town Manager Melissa Greenthal. “This recognition reflects our dedication to creating a vibrant, inclusive community where everyone can access safe and affordable housing. It will significantly enhance our ability to attract new residents and businesses, fostering economic growth and community well-being.”

With the town’s new certification, Erwin can secure more financial support for affordable housing developments, neighborhood revitalization projects, and infrastructure improvements. The town will also have access to technical assistance and guidance to implement innovative housing solutions. The resources provided by the program are expected to help Erwin address problems with housing affordability, reduce homelessness, and make sure its growing population has access to quality housing.

Municipalities must apply to join the Pro-Housing Community program and show that they’ve approved permits that increase their housing stock by 0.33% over the past year or by 1% over the past three years. Local governments that haven’t achieved this growth can still become Pro-Housing certified if they pass a resolution that pledges that the government will take action to increase housing.
