    Sports briefs: Local all-stars finish fourth in state

    ERWIN — The Mooresburg Bean Station Hancock County (MBSHC) Little League 12U All-Stars finished fourth in the state softball tournament held last weekend in Erwin, dropping a 7-6 decision to Smith County in the consolation game.

    Members of the 12U team are Payton Bradley, Emma Dalton, Gia Pearson and Dana Lucas of Mooresburg; Alena Harrell, Kylee Killion, Kaidy Kincer, Stephanie Kledzik, Karleigh Cline, Sadie Dalton and Bri Brewer of Bean Station; Amelia Trent of Hancock County; and Cherith Greene of Rogersville.

    The 12U team is coached by head coach Greg Harrell and assistants Ashley Bradley and Jared Kincer.

    MBSHC picked up a 5-4 win over South Jefferson in its state tournament opener. The team qualified for the state tournament with a win over Maryville in the District 6 championship game.

    Southern Nationals Series returning to The Gap

    BULLS GAP — Volunteer Speedway will host the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Series $7,553-to-win super late model event on Sunday, July 14. A $3,000-to-win Volunteer 100 enduro is also scheduled, along with racing in sportsman late model, street stock and front wheel drive.

    Adult grandstand tickets are $20 each, with youth under 10 admitted free. Pit tickets are $40 each, with those under 5 admitted free with a paying adult. Pit gates open at 3 p.m. Grandstands open at 4 p.m. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m., followed by qualifying and racing.

    The Volunteer 100 Enduro will be for rear wheel drive vehicles only. The enduro entry fee is $150. To pre-enter, contact Volunteer Speedway operations manager Vic Hill at 423-312-4206.

    MBSHC Little League looking for umpires

    Mooresburg Bean Station Hancock County (MBSHC) Little League is looking for coaches and umpires for its 2024 fall ball seasons. Experience is not necessary, but it is a plus. Anyone interested coaching or umpiring should visit the link: https://forms.gle/apyDRKvXtSZWo64q6 to fill out a form.

    Player registration is also open for fall ball with the MBSHC Little League. Players from Hawkins, Grainger, Hamblen and Hancock counties are invited to participate.     RCS Lady Warriors to host camp

    The state champion RCS Lady Warriors will host a basketball camp for rising first through fifth grade girls and boys July 15-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Rogersville City School.

    The cost is $65 and includes a camp T-shirt and competition winner prizes.

    Panthers hit field July 15

    Eagles start football July 15

    SURGOINSVILLE — Surgoinsville Middle School begins summer football practice on July 15 from 4-8 p.m. The first practice will be held inside. Food will be provided. Practice will be held Mondays through Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. from July 16 through Aug. 2. Players must have a current physical on file to participate.

    Bulldogs’ practice begins July 18

    BULLS GAP — Bulls Gap will hold its first football practice of the 2024 season on Thursday, July 18, from 6-8 p.m. Players must have a current physical on file to participate. For more details, contact Coach Shawn Bond or Coach Ryan Guinn.

    SMS Eagles’ booster club needs volunteers

    SURGOINSVILLE — The SMS Eagles Booster Club will hold volunteer work days to paint the outside of the football field house and press box, do some light landscaping and clean up around the stadium and campus on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20.

    Friday’s work will begin at 6 p.m. and include painting in preparation for the new signage the school has planned. Volunteers will also need to offload brick dust pallets into the baseball storage facility, pull/spray weeds and spread mulch. Any work not completed on Friday will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. All booster club members and football parents are strongly encouraged to participate.

    Chiefs’ mattress fundraiser is July 27

    ROGERSVILLE — The Cherokee football team wrapped up spring practice at Knox Carter and finished the first phase of summer conditioning/practice with a solid 7-on-7 performance. Anyone looking for ways to support the Chiefs is invited to participate in pair of fundraisers to support the team.

    The Cherokee football team will host a mattress fundraiser on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the school gym. Anyone in the market for a new mattress, pillows, sheets or other sleeping items is invited to stop in. Learn more about the mattress fundraiser at https://vimeo.com/637591323.

    The football team is also selling the annual Mobuck discount cards. Anyone interested in purchasing one can reach out to any football player.

    VHS Touchdown Club hosting cleanup days

    CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer High School Touchdown Club will host a pair of cleanup days to help get the football stadium ready for the 2024 season.

    Cleanup days are planned for July 27 and Aug. 3 from 8 a.m. until noon each day. Community service hours are available for students.

    There will also be a Touchdown Club meeting on July 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the VHS library. All football parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

    The Falcons will host preseason scrimmages on Aug. 6 against West Greene, Aug. 9 against Boone and Aug. 13 against Hampton. All three events begin at 6 p.m.

    Velocity Fastpitch hosting 12U tryouts

    Velocity Fastpitch will host 12U softball tryouts for birth years 2011 and 2012 on July 28 from 6-8 p.m. All positions will be considered.     ROGERSVILLE — Signups are underway for the “Ride for Hope” bicycle event. The former “Ride Like Hale” event is back Aug. 10 with a new name, but it still offers options for 21-mile, 36-mile or 62-mile rides through scenic Hawkins County. The rides, sponsored by Just Ride Bikes & Fitness, will leave Hawkins Elementary School in Rogersville starting at 8 a.m.

    The entry fee is $35 and includes rest stops and lunch. Learn more and register online at rideforcamphope.com. Proceeds benefit Camp Hope of East Tennessee, a 100% free summer camp located in Hawkins County.
