ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) – While people are out having fun and celebrating these next couple of days for the Fourth of July, it’s important remember to stay safe.

Guardian Flight out of Escanaba says holidays are always a busy time for emergency services and hospitals across the country. They tend to see an increase in injuries from powersports and burns from firework related incidents around Independence Day.

“The Fourth of July is a great time to come together with family and friends and celebrate our nation’s independence,” said Ryan Trudeau, Base Manager, Guardian Flight in Escanaba. “If we’re going to be using fireworks, make sure you follow all of the safety instructions that are printed on the package. Don’t give fireworks to children to use and please don’t use them while you’re intoxicated. Guardian flight does respond to ATV crashes. We do see plenty of them every year. If you’re on an ATV or dirt bike or even a side-by-side, please remember to wear your helmets. Don’t drink and drive. If you’re boating or swimming this season, please make sure you’re wearing life jackets out on the water and watch any small children by the water.”

Trudeau says this is also a time of year when heat related illnesses increase.

“It should be pretty warm this weekend,” said Trudeau. “So if you’re going to be out in the sun and enjoying the nice weather, remember to take breaks, drink plenty of fluids and avoid drinks with caffeine in the. I would say that if you feel too hot, you probably are too hot. Make sure you get into the shade or somewhere cool and drink some cool fluids. If somebody is red and hot and not sweating, that can be a bad sign. If their mental status decreases and they’re not responding to you to be sure to call 911.”
