Sinterklaas, Rhinebeck’s Annual Winter Festival, is Canceled for 2024, Leaving its Future in Limbo
The annual winter festival Sinterklaas, which attracts upwards of 10,000 people each year and has taken place since 2008 in the Village of Rhinebeck the first weekend in December, will not be returning to Rhinebeck this winter due to funding and staffing concerns. Sinterklaas organizer and artistic director Jeanne Fleming told the Pilot that this was one of the most difficult decisions she has had to make. She said that due to a significant budget deficit from last year, waning financial support, and a loss of some key volunteers and organizers, they are pausing their efforts and taking the remainder of the year to “provide the time to reach out, rethink and reimagine.”

Freedom rings at Eric Sloane Museum
Community members gathered Saturday, July 6 for the Eric Sloane Museum’s annual bell-ringing ceremony in observance of Independence Day. The Eric Sloane Museum in Kent celebrates the work of the late Eric Sloane, a Connecticut artist and author. In addition to his works, the museum also displays a series of tools which Sloane collected. According to the museum’s page on the State of Connecticut’s official website, “Sloane himself arranged and labeled his extensive collection, telling a fascinating story about bygone times and the great American heritage of craftsmanship.”

Salisbury June Real Estate Sales
SALISBURY — There were seven residential sales recorded in June in Salisbury. Five of these sales sold for less than the listing price indicating either a softening market or over pricing by owners. Currently there are 20 houses listed on the MLS with 13 over a million dollars, and five over $4 million. For the 12 months ending in June the median price of a single family residence was $865,000.
Attorney General James Announces Takedown of Ghost Gun Trafficking Operation in Queens
New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced a 625-count indictment charging five individuals for their involvement in a gun trafficking operation that sold dozens of ghost guns, assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in Queens, New York. An investigation led by the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) recovered 86 firearms – including 55 ghost guns and 25 assault weapons – along with over 90 high-capacity magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The individuals involved in the operation transported 3D-printed ghost guns assembled in Nassau County and serialized firearms purchased in Indiana into Queens, where they were stored and sold.

Additional charges filed against Ex-Wall High School teacher
FREEHOLD — Former Wall High School teacher Julie Rizzitello will return to court next Tuesday to face charges related to a sexual relationship she is accused of having with her former student after she was brought up on two new charges when she appeared in court today. Rizzitello, 36, of Brick Township, who resigned from her teaching position before her arrest, was charged with two counts of sexual assault, witness tampering and three counts of criminal sexual contact when arrested at her home by Wall Township Police on July 3.
