The Detroit Tigers activated right-hander Casey Mize from the 60-day injured list, and he started against the host Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

In other moves, the Tigers designated left-hander Joey Wentz for assignment and transferred right-hander Alex Faedo (right shoulder strain) from the 15- to the 60-day IL.

Mize, 27, last pitched on June 30 and picked up a win over the host Los Angeles Angels before going on the IL because of a left hamstring strain. He is 2-6 with a 4.23 ERA, 21 walks and 58 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings over 16 starts this season.

He made four rehab starts at Triple-A Toledo and had a 2.63 ERA with four walks and 17 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings. Friday was the first day Mize was eligible to return to Detroit's active roster.

The Tigers made Mize the first overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft. In parts of three seasons (2020-22, 2024), he is 9-19 with a 4.28 ERA, 77 walks and 206 strikeouts in 267 1/3 innings over 55 starts. He had Tommy John surgery in 2022 and back surgery in 2023.

Wentz last pitched on Thursday, getting hit by two comebackers in a three-pitch span against the visiting Angels. He went two innings, allowing one hit ( Michael Stefanic 's comebacker), no runs and no walks with three strikeouts of a 3-0 loss.

The 26-year-old is 0-2 this season with one save, a 5.37 ERA, 27 walks and 60 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings over 38 relief appearances. In parts of three seasons with Detroit, Wentz is 5-17 with one save, a 5.81 ERA, 87 walks and 185 strikeouts in 70 games (26 starts).

Faedo, 28, is 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA, 28 walks and 55 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings in 37 games (six starts) this season. He went from the paternity list on Aug. 22 to the injured list after "renewed soreness" while throwing at the Tigers' facility in Lakeland, Florida.

Manager A.J. Hinch said Faedo had lingering shoulder soreness earlier this season.
