Girls basketball recruiting: The best players across categories

Non-scholastic basketball reaches new levels every spring and summer.

It's not just the talent; it's also the opportunities to view them. From the elite club events outside of the evaluation period (The Prime Event Series, WPA Bruins Tip-Off Classic, Earned Not Given, Summer Jam, etc.) to the condensed and intense July evaluation period -- when college coaches can observe -- to the shoe-sponsored all-star events, hoopers are afforded to opportunity to compete and perform on many platforms and on big stages.

This year saw the introduction of another to the summer calendar: Overtime Select brought 64 elite players to Atlanta for a variety of on- and off- court basketball-related activities. It culminated this past weekend with Kate Harpring leading her Double Dynasty team to the championship, winning MVP in the process.

With all the events of summer finally over, it's time for another update of ESPN's player rankings. There's been a lot to observe since the last edition. Statistics and analytics were reviewed, along with hours of game film and pages of evaluation notes. Discussions and debates ensued, and our team arrived at the final conclusions. Here are the newest rankings for the 2025 ESPN 100 , 2026 ESPN 60 and 2027 ESPN 25 classes.

We also had questions from this group of 185 talented players: Who were the best shooters? The most eye-catching playmakers? Who had the most upside? Who led their teams to wins on the major circuits? Let's review the best players that stood out -- some in multiple categories.

SHOOTERS

These players proved, through consistency and an impressive volume, that they can shoot the ball from the mid-range, long distance and the free-throw line. With the game becoming more perimeter-oriented, spacing is key - and shooting equals spacing in most cases.

Aaliyah Chavez

Chavez is the most accomplished and confident shooter in the country. She has consistently proven that she will take and make shots. She has put in the work and expects the results. When she follows through, expect the shot to go in. What's unique about Chavez is most of her shots come off the dribble, as she is adept at creating space to get her shot off -- which she can do quickly. She is lethal beyond the arc, has perfected the mid-range floater game and is nearly automatic from the free-throw line.

She is still considering offers from LSU, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and UCLA.

Speiser has always had a reputation as a knock-down shooter, but since April she has been on a serious heater, including shooting 54.5% at Nike Nationals (overall in the EYBL season she shot 47.3%). She was the best long-range shooter at USA U17 Trials in May, and at the EYBL in July had a game where she went 11-13 from the 3-point line, finishing with 40 points. Speiser has a strong base and a broad build to go along with a quick trigger, high-release finish. She hunts 3s and knows how to get to her spots. Players have to close her out with caution because she has learned how to use her body to drive by and physically take the ball to the rim.

On several occasions this summer, Hall went on scoring bursts that eventually carried her team to the Select Events Power 24 Championship. She is one of the best one-on-one players in the country, possessing the skills to shake a defender to get by them or create space for a pull-up jumper, knock down the 3-ball or advantageously cut for a post-up possession. Hall glides to the rim and has a complete finishing package. She's long and built strongly for finishes with contact. Some suggest her performance this summer was fueled by not making the U17 USA Basketball team. Her move to Montverde Academy in Florida will provide a stronger high school schedule and a more focused development plan, surrounded by better players. Look for her to continue to improve her game.

She has offers from all major conferences, and essentially every major program in the country.

Few had an excitement and buzz this summer like Smith. A small guard with an easy-to-underestimate demeanor, she is in attack mode the moment she steps in between the lines. Ultra-skilled with all the answers, Smith is quite effective in the pick-and-roll; she reads and manipulates defenses like she created their game plan for them. She has long range and efficiency on her 3s, and a handle to attack in the smallest of spaces to create her own offense or drop a dime to a teammate. She's well known for her shooting and scoring numbers but her secret sauce is knowing how to map the floor as well as anyone in the country - which makes her dangerous. Could she be the best player regardless of class? Maybe...

Smith's recruitment as the No. 1 player in her class includes all the major programs in the country.

Basketball is a fast-paced game with quick decisions made each game. These players use their extraordinary talents to change the outcome of a contest. They can score, make teammates better by setting the table with assists and leave an impression on the defensive end. And they do it with a flair that makes the game fun to watch.

Davidson is as complete a high school player as we have seen the past few years. She's a tall guard with the ability to play multiple perimeter positions and both on and off the ball. She rebounds well for a guard, which allows her to ignite the break. She defends the opponent's best perimeter player with intentionality and pride. And she is a three-level scorer. Davidson understands the game well, facilitates for others and makes winning decisions and plays. At the USA Basketball U18 trials in May, she was the most assertive player on the court, immediately making a difference with her confidence and aggressiveness and winning a FIBA U18 Americas Gold Medal. At the Nike Nationals event at the end of July, Davidson was the second most statistically consistent and impactful player according to Cerebro Sports Analytics, averaging 18.4 points, seven rebounds, and 4.7 assists and was 52.7% overall from the field. And in August, she was a member of the U18 USA 3X3 Gold Medal team, hitting the game-winning shot in the final.

Davidson has narrowed her recruitment to Texas, USC, Duke, UConn, UCLA and TCU.

Harpring is undeniably one of the biggest stock-risers of the summer. She has taken her play to another level and demanded top-five consideration in the class.

She plays like every possession matters, and she is one of the most complete competitors at the high school level. She has added some wiggle to her handle, making her a tough cover in open court and close-out situations. Because of the strength and physicality in her build, she has a major advantage once she gets a defender on her hip on drives to the rim. She has always slashed to the rim well and had rise on her jumper; now, she is hunting the 3-point shot more, very key in her development. She makes a lot of plays in passing lanes defensively due to her high IQ and ability to read the floor, and rebounds really well for a guard. Opposing players do not love when she applies ball pressure defensively, another standout trait.

Harpring had a summer full of offers including, but not limited to, USC, Oregon, Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, UCAL, Baylor, Notre Dame, Iowa, Arizona, Louisville, Utah and Maryland.

Rebounding takes grit, knowledge and skill. As more long-range shots are taken in the game, learning the nuances of tracking the ball and maneuvering for position to rebound takes time and focus. These players value the glass and help their teams win because of it.

Davis has a serious motor, and has been one of the leaders in this area for the better part of the past two seasons. She finds ways to get her hands on rebounds on both ends and her second jump ability stands out. In an environment in which players do not always like to accept the forward role, not only has Davis accepted it, she has thrived in it. She finds holes in the defense and tracks the ball off the rim very well. She is highly efficient in the mid-range and finishing around the rim with exceptional footwork and touch off the glass.

Davis's recruitment seems to be primarily focused on programs in the Big 12 and SEC but she has yet to narrow down a list of finalists.

Another major stock-riser from the summer. One of the younger players competing on the EYBL's 17U level, Williams brings a physical presence. She carves out space when shots go up and muscles her way to rebounds out of her area. Her strong build and long arms allow her to get to balls that seem impossible. At Nike Nationals in July, Williams averaged a double-double with 16.4 points and 11.3 rebounds, tallying double-digit rebounds in six of the seven games she played. With an understanding of the value of controlling the paint and the glass, look for her recruitment to continue to rise. So far, she has received offers from South Carolina, Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan, UNLV, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Maryland, UCLA, North Carolina and Florida, among others.

AROUND THE RIM

These players impact the paint on both ends of the floor. They can score in post-ups and the face-up game, rebound offensively and defensively and protect and defend the paint -- both in primary and help situations. This group may score near the rim frequently, but don't mistake that for taking the easy shots -- they battle!

Betts is the best post player in the country. She's an example of a new-age 5-player, one equipped with perimeter skills as well as an old-school ability to bang inside. Betts has really gone to work the past year learning how to be patient and play to her natural strengths. She has a very strong base, which allows her to establish herself inside. Then, when she's double-teamed, she passes well and will take her game out to the top of the key to facilitate or -- a more recent development -- consistently knock down threes. Defensively, she patrols and protects the paint and can play in a multitude of ball screen coverages, something the average post player simply cannot do at the high school level.

Bradley had a huge summer. After dealing with a leg injury during the high school season, she used the spring to patiently recover. Once June and July hit, it was evident a major post presence was emerging. Bradley has a strong frame, base and excellent posture for a young big. She can post up strongly and hold position. She has advanced footwork and clearly has been coached well in the technical aspects of offensive game and post defense.

A talent inside with mobility and good hands, look for Bradley to sought after on the recruiting trail. She already has offers from Louisville, Iowa State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Central Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Iowa, Baylor and South Carolina.

DEFENSIVE IMPACT

Defense is as complicated and intense as ever with the game moving towards more space, pace and perimeter actions. High basketball IQ is not just for the offensive end. Traditional "help the helper" rotations will not cut it these days, nor will an easy switching strategy to keep things simple. These players have displayed the physical abilities and the knowledge to stand out on this end of the court.

With a high motor and activity level, Civil can make plays others cannot. Long, quick and fast, she harasses opposing ball handlers and terrorizes passing lanes. She rebounds very well for a guard, then it's off to the races in transition. Even though she isn't imposing size-wise, she leaves a physical impression on the floor because of her effort and pace of play.

Civil has narrowed her recruitment to the following: North Carolina, Miami, Florida State, South Carolina, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama and Florida.

Coming off of a successful high school season, Wilson took full advantage of the opportunity to play for the Boo Williams program. A physical defender on the ball, she picks up almost full court from the jump and wears opponents down with her pressure. Her lateral movement allows her to pressure and disrupt, and create offensive opportunities from her defense. It should be noted she also had a 40-point, 9-rebound game against Cy Fair at Nike Nationals.

Wilson saw a huge uptick in her recruitment after July, and has offers from places including Arizona, Ole Miss, Penn State, Central Florida, St. John's, Auburn, West Virginia and Baylor, among others.

VERSATILITY

These players are comfortable all over the floor and have shown they can play a little inside, expand their skillset and guard multiple positions. Basketball was invented as a way for players to make plays and not be confined to a position or space on the playing field. These players can play all over the court.

Knox is the kind of high-energy hybrid forwards the game is looking for. She brings a level of intensity that leaves a mark on opponents. Defensively, she denies passing lanes hard, attacks the glass and rotates to block shots. Offensively, she has developed a handle and face-up game, as well as a spot-up 3-ball game that really set her apart from others in her class. Agile, long and bouncy, she could have a long career in the sport. Knox is good in the box scores for a double-double type of impact, shooting over 50% from the field and improving from the 3-point line (36.4% at the EYBL's third stop in Louisville).

Knox will choose between powerhouse programs in Texas, LSU, Tennessee and USC.

Known for her ruggedness and willingness to physically do whatever it takes to win, Swords has often been matched up with players bigger, older and stronger than her. She established a reputation as an old-school forward who played primarily around the rim. This summer, though, she proved she can not only step out of the paint, but also facilitate and knock down the 3. On the U17 FIBA World Cup Canadian National Team, she had 16.3 points and 6 rebounds. She shot 50% from 3 and 88% from the free-throw line. She played a major role on the best high school team in the nation last year and she will have to carry even more weight this year.

Players recognized here have the talent and physical tools to be noted but sometimes lack the experience or technical aspects to get to the next level. An argument could be made that there isn't another player in the country with an upside as high as Edwards. She is long, athletic, agile and skilled. She's also a unique thinker and personality, which comes out in how she plays the game. Edwards does not belong in any one positional box. She is a hooper with skills off the dribble, advanced footwork and the ability to shoot the ball. Her instinct and habit to play off of two feet in the paint make her stand out. Physically, she can play above the rim, as evidenced by her attempted tip dunks and her two-handed lob finishes. Defensively, she rebounds well and blocks shots with either hand -- another outstanding habit. With the right technical and fundamental work, Edwards could put herself into consideration as the No. 1 WNBA draft pick before her college career is over. She will need to be far more consistently assertive and productive to get there, but the potential is undeniable.

ETG Midwest defeated Team Lex (TX) 80-76 in double overtime in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Creighton-bound 2025 wing Neleigh Gessert led the way with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, including going 5 of 10 from 3 and 10 of 16 overall from the field. Virginia Tech-bound 2025 forward Amani Jenkins supported the effort with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

Team Lex was led by 2025 guard Keeley Parks (27 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists). 2026 wing/forward Kamora Pruitt scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds.

Nike EYBL: Cy Fair Elite (Texas)

Cy Fair defeated Mountain West Premier (CO), 68-55 in Chicago. Class of 2025 No. 1 Aaliyah Chavez was the leading scorer for Cy Fair with 30 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. She was 10-of-28 from the field and 4-of-15 from 3. Class of 2025 wing Ayla McDowell scored 14 points and pulled down 9 rebounds while 2025 LSU commit Isabella Hines had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Class of 2027 summer stock-riser Nation Williams had 14 points and 13 rebounds in a double-double effort for MW Premier.

Power 24: Legends U (Ohio)

Legends U defeated MCW Starz (MA), 72-50 in Louisville, Kentucky. Class of 2026 super recruit Saniyah Hall was the star of the game, dominating on both ends with an array of scoring moves from all three levels and playmaking out of steals and off the dribble. Class of 2027 recruit Sydney Savoury was a solid complimentary player, knocking down multiple 3s. The depth and the pace was overwhelming for MCW and Legends U ran away with it in the second half.

Under Armour Next: WV Thunder - Johnson

WV Thunder defeated Minnesota Fury, 62-53 in Hamilton, Ohio. In a heated back-and-forth contest through the first two-and-a-half quarters, WV Thunder finished strong after breaking out with back-to-back 3s in the third quarter. Class of 2025 Cincinnati commit Darianna "Dee" Alexander was sensational with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, controlling the whole game. Class of 2025 recruit ZaKiyah Johnson took advantage of her size inside to record 20 points and 6 boards. Class of 2025 shooter Brynleigh Martin contributed 11 points in the win.

The Minnesota Fury were led by the 2025 duo of Michigan State commit Jordan Ode (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Addison Mack (13 points).
