Long: Still time to appeal Tax Assessments

About 100,000 Tax Assessment Notices were not mailed on time. Some of these delayed notices were in our district. I have heard from several constituents that their tax assessment notices were delayed. Another problem we are seeing is soaring property values. I recently hosted a townhall to talk about the tax assessment appeal process. I want to note that if you received your assessment notice late, you still have time to appeal your property’s new value. Now is the time to appeal if you think the assessed value is too high. Your tax bill in July will be based off this new assessed value. The increased assessment will affect how much you pay on your property tax bill. If you have a mortgage, your monthly payments will increase to cover the escrow.

People commonly appeal their taxes if the house needs repair. I would also suggest appealing if you live near the water. We were not able to use the water for 2 years due to the negligence at the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant. If you don’t request an appeal, the County will continue to collect a larger revenue with this assessment increase. If you still haven’t received your assessment or have any questions regarding the tax appeal process, please call my office at 410-841-3458. We will be happy to assist you.
