ESTANCIA, N.M. (KRQE) – Estancia is desperately asking the state for help. According to the mayor, their current water supply is unstable. “Two days ago, we were this far from an emergency, now we’re this far from an emergency but hopefully that gives us time to be approved and get a new well for the town of Estancia,” said Estancia Mayor Nathan Dial.

This week, the town of Estancia asked the more than 1,200 residents to conserve water because their well water was running low. “In all reality, we have water issues daily whether it’s a leak, but this was a well issue, and literally we’ve been playing with this off and on for about three weeks trying to figure it out. Trying to adjust it,” said Dial.

The town has two primary wells to supply the town’s water and another that feeds into the pond. The town said one primary well was not working properly this week, while the other was unable to keep up with demand.

This week their supply got down to 20 feet of water in their storage tanks. As of Friday morning, it was at 56 feet. The town hopes to add a third primary well. After some maintenance, the town said both primary wells are now working, but they don’t know for how long.

The town is still asking for people to be mindful of their water use because the tanks are not at the level city officials would like them to be. The mayor hopes to get state funding to build another primary well. “Once we get the current well maintained, I’ve already submitted through the water trust board to apply for a grant.”

According to the mayor, rough estimates right now show there are four days worth of water currently in their storage tanks. The mayor said a new well would cost millions of dollars.
