Aztec Chamber of Commerce awards Educator of the Year
Two educators in the Aztec community were nominated for the Educator of the Year award given by the Aztec Chamber of Commerce at the 2024 Bootlegger’s Ball on June 8. Sherry Magee, fifth grade teacher at Park Avenue Elementary, and Catherine Olson, College Career Readiness specialist at Aztec High School, were both nominated this year by community members.
Bernalillo Dispensary Sues Town Over Green Paint
A dispensary has sued the Town of Bernalillo because the town wants the business to repaint its bright green color. The lawsuit, filed June 26, appeals a Bernalillo Town Council decision to order The Dispensary Near Me, a cannabis dispensary located at 413 South Camino Del Pueblo in Bernalillo, to repaint its building following public complaints that the bright green color made an aesthetic impact on the street’s historic ambiance. Racist conversation caught on officer's body camera
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On April 11, Albuquerque officers spotted two people connected to several armed robberies across the city. Officers detain Adriana Gonzales in a Walmart parking lot near Wyoming and Menaul Boulevards northeast. Other officers spotted Mark Benavidez coming out of the store. As they tried to detain him, a scuffle broke out as Benavidez took control of an office's rifle and fired off several rounds.
Global IT Outage Affects BernCo Assessor and Treasurer Public Access Property Tax Portals
Bernalillo County, N.M. – The Bernalillo County Assessor advises the public on the status of the Public Access portal. Due to the Global IT outage affecting many entities, the public was not able to access or perform online property tax searches via the Public Access portal. Due to the Assessor’s Office being proactive and working diligently with our vendors, services were restored around 11:00 am MDT.

Albuquerque teen pleads guilty to shooting and killing 5-year-old girl

County closes County Road 6480 in Kirtland for repaving
According to a San Juan County news release, the county will be closing County Road 6480 in Kirtland for repaving on Monday, July 29. The county road that starts on the westside of Farmington as Twin Peaks Boulevard, will be closed west of the junction of County Road 6200 after the Twin Peaks hills.
National Museum of the American Indian Presents the Best in Indigenous Film in the Native Cinema Showcase in Santa Fe
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aug. 15–18 for its Native Cinema Showcase. The museum’s 24th annual celebration of the best in Indigenous film includes 38 films this year. The showcase provides an unparalleled forum for engagement with Native filmmakers from Indigenous communities throughout the Western Hemisphere and Arctic. This year’s program begins with a panel discussion featuring Indigenous film luminaries Graham Greene (Oneida), Tantoo Cardinal (Cree/Métis/Nakota), Gary Farmer (Cayuga) and Wes Studi (Cherokee), moderated by Sierra Teller Ornelas (Navajo). All screenings and events will take place at the New Mexico History Museum; seating is first come, first served.
