Kirby Smart threw shade at one of college football's biggest programs

SEC Media Days are always filled with interesting sound bites.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart made sure he didn't disappoint.

Speaking with reporters during the week-long event, Smart made a joke taking shots at Nike CEO Phil Knight and the Oregon Ducks football program.

"I wish I could get some of that NIL money [Knight] is giving Dan Lanning," Smart joked .

It's clear that the NIL era is benefitting Oregon. The Ducks secured a top quarterback out of the transfer portal in Dillon Gabriel. Meanwhile, they currently boast the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the country for 2025, just one spot behind Smart's Bulldogs.

However, it's not like Georgia isn't benefitting from this new era of college football. Smart led his team to back-to-back national titles before being snubbed from the College Football Playoff this past season. He has a top-ranked team led by a star quarterback in Carson Beck and an exciting incoming transfer in former Florida Gators running back Trevor Etienne.

There's a good chance that the two programs face off in the College Football Playoff, potentially in a national title game. ESPN's post-spring rankings had Georgia as the No. 1 team in the country, while Oregon wasn't far behind coming in at No. 4.

Perhaps Smart is already trying to get under Lanning's skin. Or it could have just been a joke about the state of affairs in college football.

Either way, the NIL discussion isn't going away any time soon, and it's likely going to keep benefitting top-tier programs like the Bulldogs and Ducks.
