Oregon Ducks get 5-star recruiting win over Ohio State that shows they’re ready to compete in Big Ten right away

The Oregon Ducks lost out on defensive back DJ Pickett , who chose LSU over Oregon and Miami a couple weeks ago. Today, Oregon got back to flexing their recruiting dominance. After landing 4-star quarterback Jonas Williams over Ohio State, Oregon snagged 5-star safety recruit Trey McNutt again over Ohio State, USC, and others, plucking him out of his home state of Ohio.

Ohio State officially has a thorn in their sides in "that team out west."

Oregon stays hot by adding DB Trey McNutt to stacked 2025 recruiting haul

Oregon entered the weekend with the fifth-ranked recruiting class in the country, holding commitments from two five-star recruits and 13 four-stars. McNutt gives them their third five-star, joining the nation's No. 1 wide receiver recruit, Dakorien Moore, and fellow-wide receiver Dallas Wilson.

On their way into the Big Ten Conference, Oregon has made a statement that they are a national powerhouse on the cusp of chasing trophies.

“Just their staff and their program, it fits me. What their program is about is what I want to be about. With what they’re building in their program they can go all the way,” McNutt told Steve Wiltfong from On3.

Despite what recent nonsensical comments around the country might be saying, the Ducks are building a team on culture and relationships, not just NIL money. It's the stability and the competitiveness, to go along with their amenities, that are making a difference.

McNutt choosing Oregon over home state Ohio

More important than Dan Lanning being able to recruit top prospects is how, and where, he's doing it.

McNutt was born and raised in Ohio. His dad, Richard McNutt,  played at Ohio State. Having the ability to sever such strong ties and pull an elite talent out of that narrative is no small feat. The Ducks going into Ohio and plucking one of the state's best prospects is a massive sign of what the university is capable of doing on the recruiting trail.

Their top recruits are all from outside the Pacific Northwest. Moore is from Texas. Wilson is from Florida. Dorian Brew, four-star cornerback, comes out of Texas as well.

Just read down the list. Not a single top recruit is from their neck of the woods – of their top-10 ranked prospects not named McNutt, seven of them come from either Texas, California, or Florida – perennial hotbeds of talent.

What Oregon did through the transfer portal in adding QB Dillon Gabriel after losing Bo Nix to the NFL made sure that they were able to stay competitive right away. Now, what they're doing on the recruiting trail, is setting them up for sustained competitiveness in their new conference home.

Is Oregon a blue blood program ? Not yet, but they're on their way.
