Pleasant Valley School gives away 10,000 free books at book carnival
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Pleasant Valley School District #62 is making sure its students have all the resources they need this school year. A book carnival was held at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School on Richwoods Boulevard in Peoria on Wednesday. It was a one-stop-shop for families to register for the school year, pick up some free resources, enjoy bouncy houses and snack on free Kona Ice.
Coal City receives $2.6 million in state funding to replace lead service lines
Jul. 31—Illinois EPA Interim Director James Jennings announced Thursday that $43,159,886 in funding is being provided to 17 communities to replace lead service lines, one of which was Coal City. OSF Healthcare announces gift for proton beam therapy area
PEORIA, Ill. – The proton beam at the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute now has a name. OSF announced on Wednesday that it has received a $2 million gift from Polly Barton, specifically focused on proton beam therapy. The gift will now name the area containing the beam as the Glen and Polly Barton Beam.
Two Indicted on Charges of Possession of Stolen Vehicles
A La Salle County grand jury has indicted two people on charges of possession of stolen vehicles. On July 21, 33-year-old Travis Thomas of Marseilles was booked on a felony charge of possession of a stolen vehicle. According to court records, Thomas was involved in a crash that day that also led to a few tickets including leaving the scene of an accident.
2024 Ledgestone Open in Peoria: Elite+ Event Returns to U.S. with Key Players Wysocki, McBeth, Gannon, and Heimburg
The 2024 Ledgestone Open will kick off on August 1st in Peoria, Illinois, featuring separate courses for MPO and FPO divisions. As the third Elite+ event of the Disc Golf Pro Tour season, this year’s tournament will not use the typically wooded Northwood course after it recently hosted the Champions Cup. Instead, over 2,200 competitors will vie for the title at Lake Eureka and Sunset Hills. With reigning champions Cole Redalen and Missy Gannon returning, the event continues its legacy as a premier disc golf destination, offering a total purse of $117,453.
Pekin High School Artist Earns Prestigious Honor in the 17th District Congressional Art Competition
Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) congratulated Pekin Community High School senior Rachel Fry on winning the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for Illinois’ 17th District. Her winning submission, Clownish Tomfoolery, will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. “Young people across Central and Northwestern Illinois are going to be the key to ensuring our neighborhoods are prosperous for generations to come,” said Sorensen. “It is an honor to host this competition that celebrates the amazing artistic abilities of our high school students. It is my hope that these competitions inspire more students to pursue their passions.” The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 and has accepted more than 650,000 pieces of art from high schoolers nationwide. Artwork from each congressional district is selected to be displayed at the U.S. Capitol. The winner of Sorensen’s Congressional Art Competition was selected by local leaders in the arts from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.
Peoria Public Schools starts new school year with changes
PEORIA, Ill. – Though it shows July on the calendar with the summer heat hanging around, a new school year starts Wednesday for Peoria Public Schools. With a new year about to begin, a couple things will be different for the more than 12,600 students enrolled at PPS.
