10 Kansas City Companies Cutting Jobs

Kansas City, MO. - While Kansas City still enjoys a near record-low unemployment rate of 3.4%, not all workers in the metro have been as lucky this year. Take those that have received pink slips, for example.

At the end of July, Yellow Freight announced it was filing for bankruptcy and terminating employment for all of the company's 22,000 workers, including employees in the Kansas City area. However, it isn't just Yellow Freight that's cutting workers in the region.

A number of companies across multiple industries have announced layoffs in an effort to cut costs. In short, here are 10 Kansas City employers that are cutting jobs.

1. CHEP Services, LLC

Earlier this year, the logistics firm CHEP services announced it was 100 jobs in May. This was reportedly due to a loss of contract.

2. Yellow Freight

As mentioned, Yellow Freight is completing shutting down due to bankruptcy. That means around 1,000 job losses in the Kansas City region.

3. Oracle Cerner

Oracle Cerner reportedly fired several hundred employees back in the spring, including many in the Kansas City area. The company's woes are blamed on "missteps" in its contract with the VA.

4. AGI Suretrack LLC

Back in January, AGI announced that it was cutting 73 positions in Leawood.

5. Bed Bath & Beyond

Last winter, the retailer Bed Bath & Beyond announced that it was closing 4 of the company's 6 Kansas City area stores. Dozens of local employees lost their jobs.

6. David's Bridal

David's Bridal was another retailer to close its stores in the region (in addition to statewide). While the job cut totals are unavailable, it was likely in the dozens locally.

7. Deluxe Corporation

This corporate services firm based in Maryville, closed back in May. This resulted in 57 job losses.

8. Smithfield Foods

Another company just north of Kansas City, Smithfield Foods, announced it was eliminating 92 jobs. These layoffs are expected to occur in October when the company shuts down 3 farms in Sullivan County.

9. Compass Minerals

Last spring, Overland Park-based Compass Minerals laid off around 50 full-time employees. Like other companies reducing their workforce, Compass Minerals cited cost-cutting as the reason for the layoffs.

10. Bubuy Baby

Finally, after the retailer closed its Independence store in June, Buybuy Baby recently announced it would be closing the company's Johnson County store as well. This will likely mean dozens of more job losses.
